10-4 Magazine August 2025

10-4 Magazine / August 2025 81 Poetry in Motion: By Trevor Hardwick KNOW KINGS! There was a man, some time ago… His fans called him the king. They loved the way he shook his hips, And how that man could sing. The king of what, I’m glad you asked… The king of rock and roll! Another king who’s come and gone, And on and on we go. Another King, from yesteryear… Was held in high esteem. He led a massive movement, When he told us of his dream. Now take a little look around… And kindly ask yourself. Do you believe that dream of King’s, When you look at someone else? And there’s a beer, from ol’ St. Lou… The label’s white and red. It’s called the king of beers, But bud… wiser things I’ve said. Their other version, known as light… That’s the can in blue. Maybe it’s the queen of beers, I’ll leave that up to you! Some people come to know and like… King cigars and Road King bikes. A Burger King to grab a bite, On a Kingman, Arizona night. Some may like, and some may dread… Dry vans, tankers, old atbeds. Or Thermo King’s placed up ahead, Of stainless, 48-foot spreads. All these kings, I’d like to know… Where on God’s green Earth they go. When Marmon Trucks rolled with the ow, They were called kings of the road. But there IS a perfect living King… His words you’ll nd in red. He gave His life for you and me, With thorns upon His head. The King of kings, The Lord of lords… The One who truly cares. His Holy Name is Jesus, Christ, And not “the man upstairs”. The King of Heaven, high above… Creator of all things. The greatest King you’d ever know, If you ever did know Kings! While it’s true that you’re reading this in the August issue of this, the “king” of trucking magazines, but I am actually writing this in early July. Getting ready for an exciting and very patriotic celebration of our great nation, I love seeing so many people out celebrating, barbecuing in their backyards, and participating or watching parades in the small towns across America. There are even boats out on the water and reworks lighting up the sky! We are certainly blessed to be here!! Lately, however, there have been di erent kinds of gatherings in our streets. I don’t really want to give too much oxygen to some of the things we’ve all seen in the media recently, but there has been a certain movement causing a lot of chaos around the country, and it hasn’t looked very inviting, celebratory or otherwise appealing to me. But, they have a slogan for their movement. They carry signs and wave ags adorned with their slogan. Heck, they’ll even paint your car, home or business with their slogan, whether you ask them to or not! I confess here and now that I will never be found marching among the ranks of that incoherent mob, but I certainly don’t mind modifying their slogan to something a bit more my style. If you haven’t guessed already what movement or slogan I’m referring to, just take a look at the title of this month’s column (and poem).
