Once symptoms present, time is of the essence as timely assessment of cognitive impairment provides an opportunity to take action and make a difference for individuals who may be in the early stages of AD. In addition to ruling out other conditions such as past strokes, Parkinson’s or depression, the potential benefits of timely detection and diagnosis of AD include earlier: initiation of informed disease management, which helps patients and caregivers participate in the development of a care plan with their family, clinicians, support team and community resources; opportunities to support cognitive well-being which provides early intervention with nonpharmacological options such as lifestyle changes, psychological treatment, and cognitive training and utilization of pharmacological therapies to manage chronic medical conditions contributing to cognitive decline such as diabetes and high blood pressure; and consideration of therapeutic options that help your loved one engage and communicate with others while maximizing their independence, even as their condition progresses. There is no single test that can determine if a person is living with AD or another dementia. However, there are steps you can take if your loved one is exhibiting dementia-like symptoms. Sharing this information with their primary care physician or neurologist is the first place to start. In addition, you can make an appointment for your loved one to be screened at Alzheimers Coachella Valley. Screenings are conducted by a master’s prepared social worker and geriatric nurse practitioner. There is no charge for the screenings, which are available by appointment. Findings from the screening are shared with the loved one’s healthcare provider(s) with the appropriate consent.
