GRANTING WISHES IN COACHELLA VALLEY SINCE 1983. Every 20 minutes, a child is diagnosed with a critical illness. Hospital stays, doctor visits and treatments mean their lives will never be the same. From a very young age, wish kids have been forced to deal with adversity, take challenges head-on, and make sacrifices no child should ever have to consider. For these children, life looks different, filled with increased isolation and vulnerability when they can’t go to school and be with friends, and enduring treatment plans that limit their ability to play and feel strong. Since its inception, Make-A-Wish has understood that when a wish is granted, a child replaces fear with confidence, sadness with joy and anxiety with hope. We believe that every child deserves a childhood and that now, more than ever, children with critical illnesses and their families need hope. Page 15 Desert Charities News – www.desertcharities.com • www.dcnnews.com October/November/December 2025 www.laquintacliffhouse.com www.pacificseafoodrestaurant.com www.golfshadowmountain.com It’s a well-known reality that without a solid workforce of trained physicians and medical providers, our society’s health and well-being would be severely compromised. Enter the San Bernardino County Medical Society (SBCMS), headquartered in Redlands, California, a professional organization that represents physicians in San Bernardino County and plays a vital role in supporting the medical community and advocating for public health. SBCMS is one of over thirty component medical societies that serves as a local subsidiary of the 50,000-member California Medical Association (CMA), which plays a multifaceted role in shaping healthcare policy and advocating for physicians and patients across the state. Together these organizations actively sponsor and support legislation aimed at improving healthcare delivery and protecting the integrity of medical practices. The objective is ultimately to increase access to care for patients in a national environment where health care has become more unaffordable and excludes certain categories of patients, putting lives at risk. Founded in 1878, SBCMS is one of the oldest county medical societies in California, representing 3,200 physician members, including medical doctors (MDs), doctors of osteopathy (DOs), residents, and medical students. Membership in SBCMS includes automatic membership in the California Medical Association (CMA), amplifying its advocacy power. Other priority policy issues that offer powerful opportunities to shape healthcare policy at local, state, and national levels include a current bill package for private equity in healthcare, Artificial intelligence regulation, increased maternity care access, physician workforce expansion, reform of prior authorization processes and numerous others. Together, SBCMS and CMA are critical partners in the delivery of healthcare in California. Their forceful work reflects the appreciation for our super-hero physicians, healers who are committed to caring for valued patients throughout our state and beyond. LINDI BIGGI Shadow Mountain Golf Club Owner Making A Di‰erence At 84, I can say I wouldn’t change much. Life has taught me that we don’t truly own anything—we’re tenants here, and our rent is how we leave the world for others. I’ve worn many hats: owning escrow companies, a bird store, a gift shop, and a food business. Founding Loving All Animals has been a heartfelt journey. Reviving Shadow Mountain Golf Course into a thriving community space has been a proud chapter. But above all, my love for animals is what I truly own—and gladly share—hoping others are inspired to help create a better world for them too. ROXANNA BREITIGAN The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens Chief Operating Officer Making A Di‰erence As COO, I lead my teams by striving each day to make a positive di’erence for the animals, plants, and team members at The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. I find great value in staying curious—seeking answers and solutions to the challenges we face in saving species. Being collaborative, clear, and kind helps us go even farther together. I encourage our team to create a “best day ever” experience for each guest, inspiring them to connect with nature and also make a positive di’erence for the deserts of the world. CYNTHIA H. BREUNIG Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council President & CEO Making A Di‰erence As President and CEO of Girl Scouts San Gorgonio Council, Cynthia can trace her charitable roots to her own childhood Girl Scouts experiences. The organization’s service work with under-resourced communities opened the doors to a future serving vulnerable citizens. Under Cynthia’s leadership, GSSGC has created opportunities for girls from diverse and underserved communities. She also takes pride in GSSGC’s role as stewards of Skyland Ranch in the San Jacinto mountains. Before joining GSSGC, Cynthia served as President-CEO of Inner-City Arts in Los Angeles’ Skid Row and helped spearhead the opening of the Autry National Center.

. WOMEN IN PHILANTHROPY - PAGE 2 DESERT CHARITIES NEWS ANGELINA COE For me, making a di‰erence means meeting people in their most vulnerable moments and walking with them toward healing, hope, and restoration. This calling has guided my work for nearly three decades, across 29 years in the nonprofit sector, 25 years in ministry, and almost 13 years as Executive Director of Shelter From The Storm, Inc. (SFTS). Throughout my career, I have been honored to serve those silenced by domestic violence, sexual assault, and homelessness, helping survivors find their voice and reclaim their strength. At SFTS, we o‰er not just shelter, but a comprehensive path to recovery: safety, counseling, case management, advocacy, and empowerment. Every program is rooted in dignity and compassion. I have earned a Nonprofit Management Certificate from the NPO Centric, RAP Foundation URC Extension, Class of 2025, and a Leadership Certificate from the O£ce on Violence Against Women (OVW), Class of 2024, which reflect my deep commitment to impactful, informed service. But more than credentials, it is my faith that fuels this journey. With God first, I continue this good work, believing that when we enter someone’s crisis with empathy, we can help change the course of their lifetime. There is no greater honor than standing beside those who have endured the unthinkable, especially when the harm has come at the hands of a partner who once vowed to love and protect them. I am committed to being a voice for the voiceless, a light in the darkness, and a champion for those who are too often overlooked. Together, we can break generational cycles and help survivors become overcomers. Knowing what a treasure the Museum had been to her own family and to generations of families in the Desert, Cindy worked with her Board of Directors, Donors and Community to reopen the Museum a little over a year ago as a Certified Autism Center, with a brand-new Main Gallery and expanded programming. More than 85,000 guests visit the Museum each year to share in the joy of learning and family interaction. As Executive Director of SFTS since 2012, I have witnessed the profound transformation that occurs when we believe in and support those impacted by domestic violence. Our programs provide not only safe shelter, but the tools, compassion, and advocacy survivors need to reclaim their lives. Together, we are breaking cycles and building a future rooted in hope and resilience. ALISON ELSNER Alison Elsner just marked her 10-year anniversary as CEO of the Medical Society. She works with 3,300 Inland Empire physician members to improve access to care and patient equity. The medical society is a powerful catalyst to prioritize solutions to support physician practices (MDs and DOs) through Medicaid and Medicare reimbursement parity, reform of the onerous prior authorization process and increasing the number of physicians in practice through graduate medical education programs for medical students and resident physicians. SBCMS is the regional arm of the mega-powerful California Medical Association (CMA), and its mission is simple: promote the science and art of medicine, protection of public health, the betterment of the medical profession and achievement of health equity. SBCMS and CMA, with over 50,000 physician members, provide comprehensive practice tools, services and support including legislative, legal, regulatory, economic and social advocacy. Together these organizations deliver advocacy outreach and solutions for physicians, including every size of practice and specialty. After graduating with a B.A. in political science from USC, Alison worked for U.S. Senator Pete Wilson in Washington, D.C. and California Governor Pete Wilson in the Sacramento, prior to leading two non-profits and launching her own public relations firm. She currently lives in Palm Springs, California. Combining extensive political and legislative experience with financial management, public a‰airs and community relations backgrounds, Alison is honored to represent the advancement of policies that empower physicians to thrive in practice, especially during a period of increased physician shortages and the need to ensure equity and access in patient care. This devastating loss highlighted the critical lack of education and awareness around helmet safety. We’ve made it our mission to ensure no other family experiences such a tragedy. Like many, we underestimated the importance of helmets, but now we know the life-saving di’erence they make. Every hour, five kids in the U.S. su’er permanent brain damage or death from not wearing a helmet, and it’s our goal to change this. CHRIS CLEMENS Clemens & Co. President Making A Di‰erence Chris Clemens is a 22-year marketing and public relations veteran. Many of her clients are in the nonprofit sector serving audiences in a variety of capacities from the arts, education, healthcare, and special needs. She provides comprehensive marketing services to help clients with branding, strategic planning, media relations, social media, event planning, community partnerships and sponsorships, and acts as an extension of her clients by attending local events and representing them. SOPHIA DEAN Living Free Animal Sanctuary Board President and Executive Director Making A Di‰erence As Executive Director and Board President of Living Free Animal Sanctuary, I lead with the belief that rescue is more than saving lives - it’s about restoring dignity, trust, and hope. Founded in 1980 by visionary advocate Emily Jo Beard, Living Free was built on the question, “Does this bless the animals?” a question I carry with me every day. From our no-kill adoptions to equine therapy, our sanctuary creates space for healing for those in need of a second chance. I’m proud to continue a legacy of women’s leadership in animal welfare. RENE DELL’ACQUA CHAPMAN Dell’Acqua Dental Studio Philanthropist Making A Di‰erence I was raised by philanthropic parents who taught me from a very young age that giving back to your community is important. When you make a di’erence in someone’s life, you not only impact their life, you impact everyone influenced by them throughout their lifetime. For me there is nothing more rewarding than knowing that I have made a di’erence in someones life. Our community o’ers so many opportunities to get involved. We have so many meaningful charities. It has been an honor to serve on several di’erent boards over the years RACHEL DRUTEN Tools For Tomorrow Founder Making A Di‰erence I started Tools For Tomorrow in 1999. For 26 years, this free after-school program has nurtured over 22,000 valley children, ages 7 to 11, through Creative Writing, Art, Music, and Theatre. But it’s more than the arts— it’s about building character, kindness, and confidence. Our board operates with the discipline of a business, ensuring Tools For Tomorrow’s financial strength. At the heart of it all is our passionate Executive Director, Andrea Hecht, who inspires a dedicated team. Tools For Tomorrow teaching artists and volunteers give children a joyful, safe place to grow as creative, compassionate human beings.

. WOMEN IN PHILANTHROPY - PAGE 4 DESERT CHARITIES NEWS SPOTLIGHT KATE ANDERSON One of the greatest gifts we can give to children growing up in the Coachella Valley is access to higher education. Education changes individual lives, it strengthens families, builds communities, and transforms generations. That’s why I’m proud to co-chair the planning team for the free Regional College and Career Fair each year. This college fair is one of my greatest passions because it brings together an incredible coalition of partners: the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, OneFuture Coachella Valley, SoCal Edison, Desert Sands Unified, Palm Springs Unified, Coachella Valley Unified, our local school foundations, private schools such as Desert Christian Academy, Xavier College Prep, Palm Valley School, and Desert Chapel, as well as our higher education partners including California State University San Bernardino – Palm Desert, College of the Desert, and University of California Riverside – Palm Desert. The collaboration is inspiring, and every year we work together with one goal in mind: to open doors for students and their families. Together, we send a powerful message: You are not alone on this path—we are here to help you succeed! The college fair is about shifting the mindset of our entire region. It supports the cradle-to-college-to-career philosophy. College graduates are more likely to get involved in the community, support charities, join organizations, and encourage their own children to aim higher. WOMEN IN PHILANTHROPY - PAGE 6 DESERT CHARITIES NEWS KARIN JAFFIE Friends of the Desert Mountains Marketing and Development Associate Making A Di‰erence A life-long career of supporting non-profits with my storytelling skills satisfies my desire to manifest the good I want to see in the world. As the Marketing and Development Associate for Friends of the Desert Mountains, it’s easy to believe in the product I promote: connecting people to the land. Coachella Valley residents often take for granted concepts like clean water, access to nature, and the need for biodiversity. I enjoy sharing with newcomers, old-timers, and the occasional busload of 3rd graders that our desert is a living organism deserving of our care and protection. TAMARA HEDGES Greater Palm Springs Animal Allies Board of Directors Immediate Past Chair Making A Di‰erence Serving on the Greater Palm Springs Animal Allies board allows me to use my skills to help provide lifesaving services to thousands of companion animals in the Coachella Valley. In addition to operating the Palm Springs Animal Shelter, this year we opened our doors even wider to help orphaned, injured and ill wildlife at the new Desert Wildlife Center in Indio. We also launched the Desert Community Animal Center in Desert Hot Springs to provide accessible veterinary care in our region. I am inspired by the power of joyful collaboration to create positive change for animals and the people who love them. SPOTLIGHT PAM WEEKLEY Imagining herself a mini-Dr. Doolittle and especially drawn toward ill or lonely animals, a young girl named Pam set foot on a trail to philanthropy. She just didn’t know it yet. Today, with 40-plus years’ experience in accounting, finance and taxation, Pam Weekley is licensed to practice by the lions, tigers and bears of the IRS. But at day’s end, she revels in being greeted by her two adopted Jack Russell mixes. After all, whatever frustrations a pressure-filled day of tabulating figures and reviewing regulations may have held, playing fetch (over and over and over again!) with her four- footed charges defines work-life balance. Coachella-based Loving All Animals is one of many nonprofits benefitting by Pam’s desire to make a di‰erence. In fact, she “walked the talk” by adopting her canine companions from the organization. Moreover, she lends her financial expertise to Loving All Animals as its treasurer, consulting with fellow board members to ensure prudent planning and e‰ective advocacy. She also supports Konnections Certification, which – in a text and Facetime world – enables young adults to obtain person-to-person networking skills. (Face to face! Eye contact!) Don’t worry, subjects are not thrown to the wolves; rather, are given business cards and critical talking points to engage those at networking events. Pam doesn’t provide her business cards to be distributed; rather, cards that represent Parkinson’s Resource Organization, Coachella Valley Horse Rescue, Loving All Animals, and Dezart Performs. As a tribute to her mother who passed this year, Pam also advocates for organizations seeking a cure for Alzheimer’s Disease. Her philosophy? “The more you give, the more you get.” Pam Weekley Pam Weekley, MBA, EA Pam Weekley & Associates (760) 625-5549 pam.weekley@gmail.com Pwtaxandaccounting.com

. WOMEN IN PHILANTHROPY - PAGE 7 DESERT CHARITIES NEWS EVE FROMBERG EDELSTEIN In addition to serving as legal counsel, consultant, and legal advisor to build nonprofit organizations that are sustainable, and are looking to grow and expand, Fromberg Edelstein has gone from serving as the longtime co-vice chair of DAP Health to its board chair. When she assumed the role in May, she embraced not a “changing of the guard,” but a collaborative continuation of the organization’s mission. Succeeding Patrick Jordan — who guided DAP Health through the COVID-19 pandemic and the Borrego Health acquisition — Fromberg Edelstein brings four years of board service, her legal expertise, and extensive nonprofit and business experience to the position. Guided by DAP Health’s 2025–2028 strategic plan, she aims to expand the organization’s reach beyond its historic HIV focus to address the needs of other marginalized populations, including women, children, and individuals facing chronic health issues from poverty or environmental hazards. She emphasizes that DAP Health’s legacy as a refuge during health crises — AIDS, COVID-19, mpox, and the opioid epidemic — remains its foundation, even as it grows to serve more communities. Fromberg Edelstein envisions the nonprofit as a national leader in equitable, culturally competent health care, engaging “microcultures” with trust and respect. She sees her role as amplifying the voices of those who feel unseen or unheard, ensuring they know they are valued and a£rmed. With a focus on resilience, adaptability, and holistic care, she is committed to implementing the strategic plan through energy, collaboration, and a steadfast commitment to health equity. “We want to be the most powerful voice for those we serve,” she says. “You are seen.
