Through strategic messaging, storytelling, marketing, and fundraising support, I help organizations connect with the people they serve and the supporters who make their work possible. Strong communication strengthens relationships, increases community engagement, and helps worthy causes secure the resources they need to grow. By amplifying voices that are making a positive difference, Lampstand Communications contributes to a stronger, more connected community where organizations can thrive and expand their reach and influence. ALYSSA SAVALA Alyssa Savala has spent a little over a decade in the sports world, with seven of those years immersed in Community Relations and Foundation work. Across multiple professional sports organizations — including a community relations role with the Ontario Reign before joining the Firebirds — she has helped build and execute community programs and fundraising events, all while cultivating strong, lasting relationships with nonprofit partners. Now leading Community Relations and the One Valley Foundation for the Coachella Valley Firebirds, Alyssa drives initiatives that make a real difference across the Coachella Valley — from street hockey and reading programs to health and wellness outreach. She also curates the Firebirds’ weekly online auctions benefiting One Valley Foundation and leads her team in managing the in-arena 50/50 Raffle kiosks, helping generate critical funding for local beneficiary organizations. Her passion for serving her community has always been her compass, and getting to do that through sports — the thing she loves most — makes the work even more powerful. Whether she’s coordinating a raffle, launching a new outreach program, or building a nonprofit partnership, Alyssa brings the same steady enthusiasm to every project: find the need, rally the right people, and get it done. For Alyssa, philanthropy isn’t a department — it’s a mindset, and one she’s proud to bring to families across the Valley one program, one partnership, and one raffle at a time. KATE ANDERSON Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Director of Public Relations Making A Difference One of the greatest gifts we can give children in the Coachella Valley is access to higher education. Education transforms lives, strengthens families, and builds thriving communities. That’s why I’m proud to co-chair the free Regional College and Career Fair each year. Through an extraordinary partnership of schools, colleges, nonprofits, businesses, and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians, we help students and families explore opportunities and envision their future. Together, we send a powerful message: you are not alone, and the community is here to assist you in achieving success. When students thrive, our entire community thrives. And, this is the greatest reward. BROOKE BEARE BIGHORN Golf Club Director of Marketing Making A Difference Every person is gifted with the opportunity to make a difference through education and civic engagement. Attend a public outreach session or a free documentary, use the public parks, read agendas and newsletters, fill out a survey, divert your food waste, or volunteer. (Or all of those things!) When you invest in your community, you’ll be amazed at the difference you will make in yourself, those around you, and where you live. Brooke is a past President and current Vice Chair of Desert Arc. PAM BIERI Pam Bieri Marketing & Media Relations Owner Making A Difference Certified in Nonprofit Management and Grant Writing since 2018, Pamela has had the privilege of providing grant writing services for several of the Coachella Valley’s most interesting and diverse nonprofits. Among her clients are wonderful organizations that offer opportunities for kids to build character through golf; another that provides after-school and summer programs for Palm Springs youth; and one that has long-supplied adaptive mobility equipment, social inclusion for kids with disabilities, and many other family resources. Another client has brought world-class music to the Coachella Valley for nearly 70 years. It is an honor to be part of such incredible work. LINDI BIGGI Shadow Mountain Golf Club Owner Making A Difference At 85, I can say I wouldn’t change much. Life has taught me that we don’t truly own anything—we’re tenants here, and our rent is how we leave the world for others. I’ve worn many hats: owning escrow companies, a bird store, a gift shop, and a food business. Founding Loving All Animals has been a heartfelt journey. Reviving Shadow Mountain Golf Course into a thriving community space has been a proud chapter. But above all, my love for animals is what I truly own—and gladly share—hoping others are inspired to help create a better world for them too.

SPOTLIGHT SUSAN UNGER For more than 25 years, Susan Unger has supported DAP Health as a volunteer, consultant, fundraiser, donor, and member of its Board of Directors. Her commitment began during the HIV/AIDS crisis, when she sought to help ensure compassionate care for people living with HIV and contribute to ending the epidemic. Today, she is equally inspired by DAP Health’s evolution into a Federally Qualified Health Center providing comprehensive, high-quality care to 80,000 people across the region, including women, and children. Women’s health is especially meaningful to Unger. She believes it must extend beyond reproductive care to address the full range of health needs women experience throughout every stage of life — an approach reflected in DAP Health’s model of care. Unger’s leadership has helped create lasting impact. In 2006, during her first term on DAP Health’s Board, she developed 100 Women, an initiative that introduced many local women to the organization as supporters and donors and ultimately raised more than $2 million. In 2014, as a consultant, she designed and led Get Tested Coachella Valley, a three-year, $5 million regional initiative powered by 150 community partners to make HIV testing and linkage to care standard medical practice. For Unger, philanthropy is both a personal obligation and a form of advocacy. Her experiences in 1980s San Francisco, where she lost friends to AIDS and saw her brother diagnosed with HIV, shaped a lifelong commitment to act. She reminds women that meaningful change does not require wealth — just the willingness to take a first step. Women in philanthropy - PAGE 8 DESERT CHARITIES NEWS SPOTLIGHT ANGELINA COE After 30 years in the nonprofit sector, I have learned that our greatest impact is not always measured by statistics or recognition. It is found in the quiet moments when someone chooses hope over fear, safety over violence, and begins to believe that a better future is possible. Those moments have been the greatest privilege of my career and continue to inspire me every day. For nearly 15 years, I have had the honor of serving as Executive Director of Shelter From The Storm, Inc. (SFTS). Together with our dedicated staff, Board of Directors, volunteers, and community partners, we provide more than emergency shelter. We offer advocacy, counseling, case management, crisis intervention, prevention education, and compassionate support that empowers survivors of domestic violence and their children to heal, rebuild, and thrive. Every survivor’s journey is unique, but each deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. I believe leadership is not defined by a title but by a commitment to serve others with integrity, build meaningful partnerships, and create opportunities for lasting change. Whether advocating for survivors, mentoring future leaders, or working alongside community partners, I strive to leave every person feeling seen, heard, and valued. My faith is the foundation of both my life and my work. It reminds me that service is a privilege, compassion requires action, and every life has immeasurable worth. Standing beside survivors during some of the most difficult moments of their lives and witnessing their resilience, courage, and healing continues to be the greatest honor of my profession. Together, we can break generational cycles of violence, restore hope, and build safer, stronger communities where every individual has the opportunity to live with dignity and without fear. PRESERVING THE LEGACY OF GIVING IN THE COACHELLA VALLEY For more than 15 years, Desert Charities News has had the privilege of sharing the stories of the nonprofit organizations, community leaders, volunteers and supporters who make the Coachella Valley such an extraordinary place to live. Throughout those years, one thing has remained constant: behind every great cause are people and organizations willing to step forward and make a difference. With this issue, we are proud to introduce our new Philanthropist Spotlight—a special section created to recognize individuals, families, foundations and businesses whose generosity and commitment are helping strengthen our Desert community. Philanthropy is about more than making a financial contribution. It is about believing in a cause, giving of one’s time and resources, inspiring others and recognizing that each of us has the ability to improve the lives of those around us. The stories on the following pages represent that spirit of giving. Each is different. Each is personal. And each demonstrates the tremendous impact that can be made when compassion is turned into action. We are honored to share their stories—and to celebrate those who continue to make a difference throughout our community. PRESERVING THE LEGACY OF GIVING IN THE COACHELLA VALLEY If you want to understand the gift Patrick J. Payne and George Tyson Shea have given Cathedral City Senior Center, don’t start with the million dollars. Start with the room. The George T. Shea and Patrick J. Payne Community Room is the largest and busiest room at the Center, filled every day with classes, meetings, laughter, friendship and people finding the help or connection they need. It is hard to imagine a more fitting memorial. Not a plaque in a quiet hallway but a room in constant motion. Patrick and George met on July 8, 2002. Eleven years later, on the anniversary of that first meeting, they married. They shared 21 years together—years Patrick has described in two words: “total bliss.” Patrick remembers George as a perfect gentleman—wise, kind and gracious. They traveled widely, shared a love for their dachshunds Rosie, Annie and Sophie, and built an extraordinary life together. George died in 2023 at age 98. He left Patrick with a wish: move forward, enjoy life and make a difference in the lives of others. Patrick took that seriously. “George’s last wish for Patrick was to move forward, enjoy life and make a difference in the lives of others.” Introduced to Cathedral City Senior Center by longtime friend and volunteer David Banks, Patrick spent time getting to know the Center before deciding how he wanted to help. He learned about its Food Bank, programs, people and vision for the future. That mattered. Patrick did not simply make a gift and move on. He paid attention. His early generosity strengthened the Center’s nutrition program, supported wellness initiatives and established an emergency relief fund in George’s memory. Then came the transformational gift: $1 million to CathedralCitySeniorCenterinlovingmemoryofGeorge. The gift gave the Center greater stability and confidence to plan for the future. Their names were placed together on its most active gathering space, while the Shea-Payne Rapid Relief Fund turned their legacy outward, helping people at moments when a relatively small intervention can keep hardship from becoming catastrophe. Patrick remains closely connected to that work. He asks about the people being helped. He knows their stories and what is happening in the room that bears their names. When the relief fund was running low, Patrick’s response was characteristically uncomplicated: “I’m seeing Geoff Thursday. I’ll bring him a check.” That is Patrick. In 2026, Cathedral Center honored Patrick with its rarely bestowed Community Impact Award at the sold-out A Night to Remember Gala. Nearly 400 guests gathered as Patrick received the honor, with George very deliberately part of the recognition. The evening had already raised a record-setting $312,000. Then Patrick matched every dollar. In one extraordinary moment, $312,000 became $624,000 for the people who rely on Cathedral Center. Someday, people will walk into Cathedral Center who never knew Patrick Payne or George Tyson Shea. They will see their names above a room full of life and perhaps learn that two men shared 21 wonderful years—and that after losing the love of his life, Patrick found a way for that love to continue helping people they would never meet. And perhaps someone will add one more thing: Patrick didn’t simply make the gift. He stayed. The room is still busy. The fund is still helping people. George’s memory is still alive. And Patrick is still writing the story. Patrick J.
