Annual membership or individual consultations are available NOW ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS In this highly stressful world of polarized thinking, climate change uncertainties and overall unrest, having a resilient mindset is crucially important for good health. Resilience means responding to adversity by adapting and not letting stress get the best of you. A resilient response means responding to life’s stresses with equanimity; it aligns with a stoic attitude and philosophy. “The Healing Power of Resilience” is written by Tara Narula, MD, a cardiologist who practices whole person care (body, mind and spirit). In the book, she describes how she managed her own health challenges and how that affects the way she manages her patients’ health. Her temperament appears to be more like a family physician than a cardiologist.Throughout the book, Dr. Narula notes many studies that support the healing power of the resilience response. She also breaks resilience down into its fundamental components, stating that it begins with accepting your current situation. In life we all need to play the cards we are dealt and not dwell on the inherent unfairness of our situation. Life is inherently unfair and everyone has problems that may not seem obvious on the surface. After acceptance, resilience requires flexible thinking. Narula tells the story of Bruce L. Miller, Jr. who, as a 19-year-old Princeton University sophomore, was severely electrocuted playing a prank with his friends. He lost three of his four extremities and had a long recovery from severe burns. He also had an older sister who died by suicide. Miller went on to medical school and is now a hospice and palliative care physician on the faculty at the University of California, San Francisco. Narula also emphasizes that a healthy lifestyle supports resilience. This includes eating a healthy whole food diet, getting regular exercise, having good sleep habits and effective tools for managing stress. Cultivate friendships and a life of healthy habits. Know your meaning and purpose. In the book, Narula shares the story of Gabby Giffords, the former congresswoman from Arizona, who was shot in the face in 2011 and is now an advocate for gun violence prevention with her husband, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly. It is interesting to note that Lucy Hone, PhD, served as a mentor to Narula after she lost her 12-year-old daughter in a car crash. Dr. Hone is the author of “Resilient Grieving: Finding Strength and Embracing Life After a Loss That Changes Everything.” I also bought this book for my patient care library. We can all derive inspiration from such narratives of resilience and courage. Resilience changes our biology and helps us recover from adversity. Read this book for inspiration, and share it with anyone facing life’s challenges.
