www.wlfdesert.org When former Indian Wells Mayor Mary T. Roche founded the Women Leaders Forum of the Coachella Valley (WLF) in 2001, she envisioned a community where professional women could connect, support and empower one another. As the organization grew, so did its commitment to empowering our valley’s future generations. In 2012, with the support of community sponsors, volunteers and mentors, WLF launched the Young Women Leaders (YWL) educational scholarship program. YWL is an investment in the future of the Coachella Valley. The objective is for recipients to attain their educational goals and bring their talent and experience back to the valley when they start their careers. To date, with the support of community partner OneFuture Coachella Valley, the program has awarded over $900,000 in scholarships to deserving seniors. However, YWL offers far more than financial assistance. It’s a seven-month program that equips young high school women with essential life skills, leadership development and meaningful connections. Participants join in monthly workshops on financial literacy, networking, professional etiquette, personal branding and self-defense, led by WLF members and local professionals, including Kimberly Krause, founder of Konnections Certification and Christina Dulitz, who studied economics and computer science at Cornell University. The students also engage in community service opportunities to reinforce the importance of giving back. Most importantly, participants gain access to a supportive network of women who share their experience, encouragement and guidance as students prepare for college, careers and life beyond the classroom. Program alumnae often cite the relationships and connections they formed as one of the most lasting benefits of their YWL experience. Natalia Gonzalez, EdD, represents the educational opportunities made possible through WLF’s community investment. A graduate of USC and a YWL alumna, she was recently recognized with the Spirit of Excellence award at WLF's annual Women Who Rule luncheon for her leadership, community impact and unwavering support to improving student advancement. Her journey from scholarship recipient to doctor of education and recognized community leader reflects the organization's enduring mission: empowering the next generation of women leaders. When women come together with purpose, they create more than connections; they create opportunities, strengthen communities and inspire the next generation to lead. Join us in making a difference.
