No demographic has been more affected by the pandemic than today’s children. Social isolation and academic loss, coupled with fear and uncertainty, have all had a lasting effect on the mental wellbeing of this vulnerable group. To stay aligned with the evolving challenges today’s youth face, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) has expanded its mission. In addition to empowering disadvantaged youth to become independent, self-sufficient and engaged community members, the nonprofit is placing a greater focus on supporting youth mental health and well-being. “Most of the kids enrolled since the pandemic are experiencing some sort of anxiety or depression,” says Executive Director Judy Tobin May, adding that loss of social skills plays a major role. Tools are in place at the national level to support local affiliates, including providing BBBS staff with mental health certifications, but BBBS of the Desert wanted to do more for their families, kids and mentors. “We wanted to do something that brings kids and adults together and embraces them in a strong sense of community,” said Board Member Ben Dampier of Vitara Wellness. “To get them moving and active, and to provide them with local health and wellness resources.” With those goals in mind, BBBS of the Desert’s created its inaugural Fun Walk & Wellness Festival. Taking place October 18, in Old Town La Quinta from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., the event will feature a comfortable walk for all ages; interactive activities like jump rope, hula hoop, and basketball toss; vendor booths offering educational resources and healthy lifestyle options; and a Kids Zone providing crafts, face painting and free books from READ with ME. NBC Palm Springs’ Thalia Hayden will emcee the event with several guest speakers including lifestyle medicine physician Joseph Scherger, MD, MPH. Local fitness professionals will also demonstrate yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi. Proceeds from the event will benefit BBBS’s one-to-one mentoring program which is free of charge to participating youth. Gracious support is provided by event sponsors including Vitara Wellness Clinic & Med Spa, Anthem Air Conditioning & Plumbing, Renova Energy, La Quinta Chevy & Cadillac, Old Town La Quinta, NBC Palm Springs, Village Pup and Desert Health. Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to not only providing mentorship to Coachella Valley youth but also helping them navigate and overcome the lasting challenges brought on by the pandemic. Individuals, groups, businesses and families are all invited to come support their efforts. We hope to see you there! For more information and to register for the walk, visit www.BBBSDesert.org or call (760) 568.3977. Sponsorship and vendor opportunities are also available.
