Steve McKay, president of the National Football Foundation (NFF) OC Chapter, was honored at the organizaion's 62nd Annual Awards Dinner, Dec. 10, at the New York Hilton Midtown. McKay was one of five chapter presidents selected, and repre- sented the west coast region. “The NFF Chapter Leadership Awards, first presented in 1988, annually recognize five individu- als, one from each region of the country, for their commitment, generosity and leadership at the local level in fulfilling the NFF's mission of preserving, promoting the good in the game," said NFF President and CEO Steve Hatch- ell. "Their dedication and passion create a powerful presence for the NFF in their communities, mak- ing an impact and inspiring excel- lence on and off the field. We are excited to honor their exceptional commitment and sincere desire to give back." McKay has been the Orange County chapter president for the past four years, and with the chapter 10 years. McKay receives NFF award Meet the guy in the white hat Every Friday night, some foot- ball player gets introduced to Steve McKay. He’s the guy in the white hat that throws the hanky. McKay and his crew have been officiating high school and col- lege football for 10 years. The Orange County Chapter of the NFF awards scholarships annually to the best of Orange County's All-League players. McKay and his directors are pre- paring for the 50th anniversary of the annual scholarship presenta- tion in March. "The passion I have for hon- oring scholar-athletes each and every year is a fantastic feeling," said McKay. "Seeing the schol- ar-athletes our Orange County Chapter honors each year, com- peting on TV and throwing the winning touchdown feels awe- some." Off the field, McKay is the head golf coach for the boys and girls golf teams at Foothill High School. For the past 17 years, McKay has developed his own realty business, McKay & Associates Realty, Inc. Additionally, McK- ay has picked up work with the Los Angeles Chargers and is in his second year as a member of the "chain gang" for their home games. McKay and his wife, Rose, re- side in Anaheim Hills. They have four children and six grandchil- dren dispersed across the coun- try, from SoCal to Philadelphia. McKay continues to cheer for his home-state Nebraska Cornhusk- ers football team. Steve McKay The Santiago Canyon mens basketball team opened Orange Empire Conference play with a 116- 48 win over Orange Coast College. Lucas Holden, a sophomore from Canyon High School, andA.J. Gar- rity led the Hawks in scoring, with 18 points each. Paulo Araujo, a sophomore from Foothill, came off the bench to score 12. Santiago Canyon had a perfect 14-0 pre-season going into league play, and is ranked third in the state. There are only two other undefeated teams, City of San Francisco and Fullerton.
