Foothills Sentry January 2020 Page 19 High School Football Schedules Santiago Canyon women celebrate winning the CCCAA Women’s Soccer Finals. SCC won back-to-back titles, beating San Diego Mesa, 2-0. It was the team's fourth state title. Santiago Canyon College (SCC) won the California Com- munity College Athletics Asso- ciation (CCCAA) state women’s soccer championship with a 2-0 victory over San Diego Mesa College in Cupertino, Calif. It was the second straight title for SCC, and the fourth in the history of the program. With only four returning start- ers, Santiago took a five-game win streak into the playoffs, eliminating Santa Ana for the third time in the first round. SCC shut out Chaffey College and Santa Barbara to advance to the final four. San Joaquin Delta fell victim, 1-0. Santiago Canyon outplayed San Diego Mesa from start to fin- ish, outshooting the Olympians 24-3, with an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. SCC scored in the 58th min- ute when Tara Hansel headed in a pass from Brianna Diaz for her ninth goal of the season. Just 14 minutes later, Ashley Roskelly did the same off a pass from Diaz, as the Hawks grabbed a 2-0 with under 20 minutes remaining. It was Roskelly’s eighth goal of the season. From that point forward, the Santiago Canyon defense handed the Olympians their second loss of the season. Santiago Canyon finished the season 18-3-3 over- all. The Hawks also won state championships in 2018, 2009 and 2006. Santiago Canyon aptures back-to-ba k state soccer titles Selected to the All-OEC wom- ens soccer first team were SCC's Kendra Koerth, Jaqueline Alba- Diaz and Tara Hansel. Selected to the second team were Ashley Ro- skelly, Brianna Diaz, and Maddie Myers. Selected to the All-OEC mens soccer first team was SCC fresh- man Guillermo Fernandez. Lucas Clarida and Kevin Mendoza were selected for the second team. Lucas Donnelly from El Modena High School scored two goals against Segerstrom, leading to a 4-1 win. Obleda takes pro head coaching position Former Santiago Canyon mens soccer coach and Orange resident Jimmy Obleda was named to the head coaching position of the Chattanooga Red Wolves, a pro team in Tennessee. Obleda will take over head coaching duties and serve as technical director. The team is in their second season of play in the United Soccer League’s League One. Sean McDaniel, president and general manager of the Red Wolves said, “We look forward to beginning our second season with a renowned and esteemed leader at the helm.” Obleda is a former pro ath- lete, who played for eight years in Latin American and the U.S., and is happy to return to the pros, “League One creates the opportu- nity to join the professional ranks, not only for players but for coach- es as well.” Upcoming events Villa Park, Foothill, Canyon, and Orange High Schools are scheduled to compete at the 2019- 20 CIF-Southern Section Tradi- tional Competitive Cheer finals on Sat., Jan. 11 at Martin Luther King High School in Riverside. Villa Park is coming off a big win at the USA Regionals, capturing first place for the varsity and ju- nior varsity squads. The 61st Orange County All- Star Classic Football game will be held at Orange Coast College on Sat., Jan. 25. Dan Davidson from Western High School will coach the North All-Stars, and Chad Johnson from Mission Vie- jo will coach the South All-Stars. Gates open at 6 p.m., and kick off is set for 7 p.m. Jimmy Obleda Alyssa Barraza, goalkeeper for El Modena High School, dives to make the save against Irvine in a pre-season game. El Modena came away with a 3-3 tie. Ashley Roskelly was voted the Most Valuable Player in the CCCAA Women’s Soccer finals. Roskelly started all 22 games this season and has eight goals and seven assists on the year.
