Looking for love OBITUARIES Florene Bennett Mattson 1943-2020 Florene (Flo) Bennett Mattson, 76, of Orange, passed away on Jan. 5, surrounded by family and friends. She was born Aug. 18, 1943, in Metcalfe County, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Homer and Blanche Marie Bennett. She was the fifth of 11 children. She mar- ried Lloyd Ellwood Mattson on June 25, 1966 in Santa Ana. She worked in collections for most of her career for companies such as O’Neill Moving and Mc- Donnell Douglas, Inc. She retired in 2013 from Marion Technolo- gies, Inc. as a senior collection specialist. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd; son and daughter-in-law, Timothy and Janette Mattson of Orange; son and daughter-in- law, Mark and Diane Mattson of North Ogden, Utah; grand- children, Spencer, Luke and Re- becca Mattson of Orange; broth- ers and sisters, Donnie Bennett, Betty Lowery, Harold Bennett, Linda Priore, Jimmy Bennett and Sharon Steele. Her brothers and sisters that preceded her in death were Odell Bennett, Valera Fudge, Lois Conrad and Eldene Bennett. A Celebration of Flo’s Life will be held on Feb. 8, between 2 and 4 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 2400 N. Canal St., in the Parish Hall. Dr. Robert “Bob”Helton 1929-2020 Dr. Robert Norman Helton passed away on Dec. 31, with family by his side. Dr. Bob was raised in Waynesboro, Tennes- see. He graduated from Peabody Demonstration High School in Nashville in 1946, and Vanderbilt University in 1950 as a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha frater- nity. He attended the University of Tennessee Medical School, receiving his medical degree in 1954, and interned at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in 1955. He was a flight surgeon for the 13th Air Force Task Force and Military Assistance and Ad- visory Group, stationed in Tai- wan. In 1957, he was Chief Flight Surgeon at YokotaAir Force Base in Japan. On discharge in 1958, he became assistant surgeon on the passenger liner S.S. United States. He also served as physi- cian for the task force setting up the Distant Early Warning Radar site on the Greenland icecap. In September 1958, Dr. Helton began a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Herrick Hos- pital in Berkeley. He completed his residency at the University of California, San Francisco, where he met his wife, Nancy Jean Voich. Bob and Nancy mar- ried in 1962 and moved to Or- ange County, where they opened a medical practice in Garden Grove. They raised their family in Villa Park and were co-found- ers of the Villa Park Historical Society. In addition to delivering more than 4,000 babies, Dr. Hel- ton was president of the Orange County OB-GYN Society, Chief of OB-GYN at Palm Harbor and St. Joseph’s Hospitals, and re- gional chairman of the American College of OB-GYN. He was a clinical professor of surgery at St. Joseph Hospital and at the University of California, Irvine Medical School for more than 35 years. He was active in community affairs and served as mayor of the City of Villa Park during his eight years on the city council. He was an active member of the Asso- ciation of Naval Aviation and the Grampaw Pettibone Squadron, and served as a volunteer at the Chino Air Museum. Helton was preceded in death by his parents Hillard and Sallie Norman Helton, sister Norma Sue of Waynesboro, Tennessee, and his wife Nancy. He is sur- vived by his children, Pamela Es- tes and her husband Ty of Garden Grove; Kimberly Melikian and her husband John of Woodland; and Robert Norman Helton, Jr. of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and his grandson, Parker Fritch, of Santa Barbara. He is also survived by his brother Dan and wife Carol, his sister Sarah, fam- ily members in Tennessee, and friends nearby and around the world. Memorial donations may be sent to Yorba Linda United Methodist Church, Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach or the As- sociation of Naval Aviation. Carolyn“Kay” Thomsen 1938 – 2020 Kay Thomsen was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Kay was born on Oct. 9, 1938 and went to be with our Lord on Jan. 2. She and husband Pat met in high school and went together for two years before they were married on Dec. 7, 1956. They were married for 63 years. Kay’s lifelong passion was to donate her time, money and re- sources to her favorite charities: The Salvation Army; Calvary Chapel Old Towne Orange; and especially Operation Christmas Child. She spent just about every weekend going to garage sales to collect goodies for the hundreds of Operation Christmas Child boxes she made each year. She and Pat lived in OPA for 45 years, and were involved in every aspect of life there, includ- ing the OPA Women’s League. She loved working in her very eclectic garden, which has been on several garden tours and fea- tured in a garden magazine. She is survived by her husband Pat Thomsen; daughters Pam La- chance and Shelley Baumgard- ner, their husbands, Mike La- chance and Alan Baumgardner; and her grandchildren, Danielle Lachance, Corey Lachance, Jef- frey Baumgardner and Chasen Baumgardner.
