Ashley Roskelly named National Player of the Year The United Soccer Coaches Organization has named Santiago Canyon College women’s soccer player Ashley Roskelly as the Na- tional Player of the Year for Ju- nior College Women - Division 3. The announcement follows Santiago Canyon College's (SCC) second consecutive-year win of the California Commu- nity College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women’s Soccer State Championship in December. Ro- skelly was team captain for both the 2018 and 2019 back-to-back state championship seasons, with nine goals and seven assists in the 2019 season. As the Hawks 2019 season pro- gressed, the more influential Ro- skelly became, scoring or creating a goal in 10 of the last 13 games. She scored the winner in the sec- ond round of Regional Play-offs, the State Semi-Final, as well as scoring in the State Final. “In soccer, stats do not always give the complete picture,” said head coach Ian Woodhead. “Nine goals and seven assists from a holding-midfield position is a fine achievement. But more impor- tant is Roskelly's leadership on and off the field. Her actions and words make her a worthy choice for this prestigious award.” She is the first Hawk since Les- lie Bryant in 2009 to be named “National Player of the Year.” She was also named the CCCAA Most Valuable Player in the State Finals and State Final- Four Tournament MVP. SCC basketball jumps to No. 2 in California The battle of the undefeated took place on Fullerton Col- lege’s home court. Santiago Can- yon (16-0), ranked No. 3 behind Fullerton, pushed Fullerton into overtime, challenging Fullerton for the first time this season. The score was 61-61 after regulation. Fullerton won the game, 71-65. The rankings didn’t change. Santiago Canyon got a little help from its friends, Riverside and Saddleback, dropping two losses on Fullerton, moving up from third and dropping Fullerton to fourth. Santiago now (20-1) has won four straight games since the loss. Santiago Canyon will host Ful- lerton at home on Feb. 11 for the rematch to determine who will take the OEC title -- or share it. Head coach Ian Woodhead and staff from Santiago Canyon Col- lege were honored by the United Soccer Coaches Association with the 2019 National Staff of the Year award for junior college women’s soccer, as voted on by the coaches in each division. Thirteen of the 14 award win- ners claimed the national or divi- sional championship in their re- spective division in 2019. Wood- head also received the award in 2016, 2017 and 2018. The staffs were honored at the United Soccer Coaches Awards Banquet on Jan. 17 at the Balti- more Convention Center, in con- junction with the United Soccer Coaches convention.
