Cause and effect. Me writing this, you reading it. I often tell clients that too much medication on trees will lose its effect and trigger another effect, sometimes a negative one. I have many clients who ask: “Why don’t we just treat all our trees all year round with insecticide, then they will always be protected, and will never get attacked?” Sounds good, in theory. But, in reality, species-specific pests that are naturally drawn to that tree will only evolve and change to the point where that insecticide is no longer effective at all. In fact, many “over the coun- ter” products sold in gardening stores that advertise a specific molecule to target -- let’s say fo- liar pests -- may actually be help- ing the pests build a tolerance to the insecticide. Most products sold in stores that boast a specific molecule can only be sold if they contain under a certain concen- tration percentage. This builds the pests’ immune systems and may even attract more pests by default. Another example of cause and effect: removing your avo- cado tree may effect the avocado trees three blocks away, and your neighbors' trees may stop produc- ing fruit altogether. Dust that comes off the Saharan desert feeds the Amazonian forest in Brazil. Ecosystems of diverse regions of the earth are strongly interconnected. That same desert dust that reaches the Amazon ba- sin provides nutrition to the soil -- soil that would normally be in- fertile and nutrient-deficient, due to heavy rains leaching it out of the soil. An estimated 22,000 tons of Saharan phosphorus lands in the Amazon, returning almost ex- actly what was washed away. So, without the world’s driest, most desolate place, the world’s most vital and vibrant place would not be what it is. When planting a tree in your garden, you may have only in- tended it to block a neighbor or provide shade for your patio. You may not have thought about how it would effect our bees or butter- flies. A fragrant plant or tree can im- pact the way you feel and your mood when you walk past it, which may impact your interac- tions with people for that day -- and who knows where that could lead? Cause and effect. TARWF to address redistricting The Tustin Area Republican Women, Federated will feature OC GOP Chairman Fred Whita- ker at its first general meeting of 2022.
