The Friends of the Villa Park Library hosted Paddy Hirsch at a recent author luncheon fundraiser held at the Phoenix Club. Hirsch is a fiction writer, finan- cial blogger and the author of the Justin Flanagan series. The Villa Park Library has his books, “Dev- il’s Half Mile” and “Hudson’s Kill” in its collection. Besides enjoying the speaker and lunch, guests were privy to baskets of opportunity prizes, in- cluding two blockbusters: a New- port Harbor cruise and the chance to be mentioned by name in Hirsch’s next book. Barb DeFran- chi purchased the four-hour sail- boat cruise donated by Bob and Elaine Connell. Ron Accornero bought inclusion in the author’s next book. He and wife Debbie were interviewed by Hirsch about their lifestyle, likes and dislikes, so that he could better intertwine their names in his next novel. The event was co-chaired by Harriet Wedemeyer, Jonna Allison and Monica Helzer. Other mem- bers of the Friends board who were present were James Allison, Bob Bell, Malki Moonesinghe, and President Bill Baker, who act- ed as emcee and auctioneer. The Friends thank all who at- tended and hope everyone will visit the library to be welcomed by librarian Shawna Carlis and staff. Kathy Thomas (left) a nine-year member of the Woman’s Club of Orange, was presented with the Heart Award by President Cheryl Krause. The Heart Award is given to a member who has demonstrat- ed character in overcoming challenges and has a passion to improve her life and that of her community. The Heart Award is meant to inspire others. Thomas’s name has been added to the “Heart Award Recipient” plaque that hangs in the clubhouse foyer.
