Longtime residents shared their recollections of the Hidden Jewel’s citrus groves and muddy streets. Jim Reichert, a former councilman and mayor, recalled the days of having city meet- ings interrupted by truck traffic, long before the council chambers were built. Bill Underwood, city treasurer, inspired a great deal of reminiscing when he quizzed the audience from a vintage “Villa Park Shopping Center & Ad- dress Directory,” when the Town Center included a Radio Shack, a pool supply and hardware store. Jill Kuli related the change from Mountain View School to Villa Park Elementary; and Rotary President Vito Canuso spoke to the beginnings of the Villa Park Community Services Foundation. Catherine Wells, a former VPWL president, has a street named after her. She, and wives of the other councilmen seated at the time, had streets named in their honor after the planning committee rejected other names. It was Wells who selected the hummingbird as the city bird, be- cause it is small, fast, beautiful, and gets a lot done - like Villa Park Women's League members. Catherine Wells, VPWL president in 1980-81, reminisces about the city’s early days and formative years. Sandy Claws was found with her ba- bies, after being dumped in a feral col- ony. All four of her babies have been adopted, and Sandy is ready to find her forever family. Sandy is an approxi- mately 2-3 years old, petite orange tab- by. While Sandy is incredibly sweet, it does take her time to adjust to and trust new people. Sandy also has a selec- tively spicy side. She loves to cuddle... on her terms. Sandy would do best in a home without other kitties or small chil- dren. She would do OK with older, cat- savvy children who understand she is to be worshipped on her own terms. While Sandy has had limited exposure to small dogs, she might do best in a home with- out dogs. Sandy is spayed, up-to-date on vaccinations and microchipped. If you are interested in giving Sandy the forever home she deserves, please email Pets of Orange at petsoforange@gmail. com to complete an adoption applica- tion. Looking for love
