Keefe earns two more All- American awards Chapman University senior Dillon Keefe made more history as theAmerican Football Coaches Association recognized him as a First Team All-American. He earned 2021-22 Division 3 football First Team All-American honors for the second consecutive season. The El Modena grad also earned the distinction as one of the best linebackers in Division 3. Keefe was once again recognized as the SCIAC Defensive Athlete of the Year. Fellow senior Duncan Heger was honored with the John Zinda Award to highlight 14 Panthers included on the All-SCIAC teams. His post-season awards included the scholar-athlete award from the National Football Foundation-OC Chapter for carrying a 3.44 GPA. Santiago Canyon places five on the All-Conference team The Santiago Canyon Hawks basketball team placed three on the 2022 Orange Empire All- Conference first team, David Agba, a 6-5 guard, Eric Howlin, Phil Hughes selected as Canyon High School head football coach Phil Hughes, from Sunny Hills High, School, has been named as the new head football coach at Canyon High School. Coach Hughes has spent the last seven seasons as an assistant coach at Sunny Hills and comes to Canyon with over 12 years of high school coaching experience. Coach Hughes played a signifi- cant role in turning Sunny Hills football into a perennial top 25 program in Orange County. Sun- ny Hills qualified for the playoffs in each of Coach Hughes’ 7 sea- sons there, this success coming after the Lancers had only mus- tered 3 winning seasons in the previous 15 years. Hughes also helped guide the Lancers to their first CIF title in 27 years in 2019. This past season, Hughes was named Defensive Coordinator of the North OC All-Star team. Canyon High School hires a new CC coach Canyon Athletics announced the Brian Brierly as its next head girls and boys cross country coach. Brierly has spent the last 14 years coaching cross country and track at Edison High School. While at Edison, Coach Brierly led the Chargers to two league titles, eight CIF cross country appearances and one state appearance. Brierly competed at the collegiate level in cross country and track&field for theUniversity of California, Irvine, where he set personal bests of 26:31 in the 8K for cross country and 15:23 in the 5K for track & field. Coach Brierly is not new to the Canyon family, as he has been a chemistry teacher at Canyon High School since 2014, and has built strong relationships with many Canyon student-athletes. “I amexcited for theopportunity to be a part of the Canyon cross country family," he said, "and continue the excellent tradition that has been established.” Canyon Athletic Director Nate Harrison commented, “Anytime you can add an on-campus coach the caliber of Brian Brierly, it is a real win for the program and for our student-athletes.” Athletic Director Ashley Higuera added, “Our cross country program has been one of the truly elite programs in the state, and we are confident that Coach Brierly is the right person to continue and build on this success.” Stella Turner (a former Foothill athlete) from San- tiago Canyon College picked up her ninth win of the season. Turner gave up two runs and two hits and struck out two against Saddleback College. a 6-2 guard and Drew Yezbak, a 6-0 guard. The Hawk's Aaron Wadman, a 6-3 guard, and Preston Sims, a 6-5 guard were on the second team. Erik Howlin, first team Orange Empire All-Conference from San- tiago Canyon College, led the Hawks in scoring, with 26 points against MiraCosta College in the finals. Howlin averaged 14.5 PPG for the season. David Agba, (15) a sophomore from Santiago Canyon College, outjumps a MiraCosta player in the Southern California Regional State playoffs. Agba finished the game with 17 points. Santiago Canyon (22-6, 12-4) lost the semi- final game, 84-74. Ethan Gibbs from Canyon High School slides into third base safely. Canyon lost to Newport Beach at Anaheim Stadium, 5-0. Riley Piattoni, the second baseman for Santiago Canyon College, turns the double play against Saddleback.
