She brought an enlarge- ment of ORCA's last publicly available board roster, listing Ortega as a member, and a copy of the email ORCA sent to mem- bers advising them who to vote for. “Ortega called me a liar when I brought this up at the last meet- ing,” she said. “I’m not a liar. He is connected to this entity. Ortega should not be part of this discus- sion.” Yamasaki and Kris Erickson both reminded the board that the item on the consent calendar was not what was discussed at the last meeting, that a design for a 51-m pool should not be the next step. They were expecting estimates first. “ I just want to do what we said we’d do,” Yamasaki said. “We said we wanted estimates,” Erickson confirmed. “We wanted to look at options. This was snuck onto the consent calendar, and I don’t know why it’s there.” “I don’t remember it that way,” Ledesma said, “It’s neither here nor there. The VP pool is going to go down. This is an emergency.” One for all Facilities Manager Scott Har- vey explained that the VP design is a “representative estimate” for all school pools. “The assessment is a concurrent process. We will also get estimates for different size pools, but we need a concep- tual design in order to get a price estimate that won’t change. This is meant to be a planning tool, so we have actual numbers.” He added that the other pool assess- ments were not on the agenda because they were under $15,000. Erickson and Yamasaki restat- ed that Harvey’s explanation was not what appeared on the agenda, which only identified a $45,000 expenditure for the design of the VP pool. “Why,” John Ortega inquired, “are you so against kids using the aquatic center?” When the ElMo pool failed, it took four years to build a new one, he reminded his colleagues. “We’re in dire need. “We know we need a pool.” “I saw the pool, and there’s a hole in it,” Madison Miner inter- jected. “This isn’t about politics, this is about high school stu- dents.” She was unconcerned about Ortega’s ORCA connection. “It’s not going to get done until Orte- ga’s daughter (a swimmer) is out of high school. She won’t even be there." Vote one, vote all Yamasaki suggested Ortega recuse himself from the vote. He refused, insisting that ORCA had nothing to do with it, and he hadn’t been involved with the club for seven or eight years. He moved to approve the pool ex- penditure; Ledesma seconded. Erickson advised that she didn’t want the item “jammed through,” that “we need to know what we are voting on.” She amended Ortega’s motion to include a ref- erence to 25-m and 30-m options. Ledesma did not want to formally amend the item because Harvey had already explained the dis- crepancy and, “we all heard what we heard.” Her amendment passed, 5-2 (Ortega, Ledesma opposed). The vote on the amended motion was 5-2, with Yamasaki and Ana Page saying no. It was after 11 p.m. when pub- lic comments on non-agenda items were heard. Many docketed speakers had left by then. One man who endured the five-plus hour meeting in order to speak apologized for previ- ously calling teachers “animals.” “It’s an insult to animals,” he said, “these people (in the room) should be fired.” Ledesma adjourned the meet- ing at 11:59 p.m. Darshan Smaaladen points out an ORCA board member list with John Ortega's name on it.
