The team awards, based on a cumulative grade point average, were awarded in 27 team sports. Entries from 1,902 teams were received this year. Thirty-three different CIF-SS member schools are represented amongst the team winners. The annual academic awards program is sponsored by the Southern California Ford Deal- ers. To be considered, teams must have at least five student-athletes with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA average (4.0 scale) in the first se- mester or first two quarters, of the 2022-23 school year. The highest team GPA in each sport category by CBED (California Basic Edu- cational Data) enrollment deter- mines the winner. Schools are di- vided into two CBED enrollment categories, 1,500 and above, and 1,499 and below. The team with the highest GPA in each enrollment category for each sport receives the award. The first-place teams receive a banner to commemorate their achievement. All teams who par- ticipate and qualify receive Aca- demic Award certificates. The Villa Park girls softball team was just a tad smarter, edg- ing out the boys baseball team. The girls had a 3.814 GPA and the boys team had a 3.791. Or- ange Lutheran girls golf posted a 3.848 GPA. Foothill High : 3.690 GPA, girls lacrosse honorable mention; 3.797 GPA, second place boys swimming and diving. Tustin High : 3.647 GPA, boys basketball honorable mention.
