Fruit Trees: Common Pests and Solutions Fruit trees are often some of the most heavily infested trees in the landscape. The reason is because fruit trees have been selectively cultivated to put almost all of their energy into their fruit, leaving little energy for pest resistance. However, not all pests are created equal. Some pests are considered “cosmetic” and at low population densities do not cause significant harm to the tree or fruit (i.e. aphids, citrus leaf miners, thrips, and sooty mold). Other pests are a much bigger concern and should be controlled where found (i.e. Asian citrus psyllids, citrus bud mites, glassy-winged sharpshooters, and stem borers). Many pest control solutions are not recommended for fruit trees, due to health concerns. Over-the-counter products like neem oil can be used safely and effectively to treat cosmetic pests at low population densities. Where sooty mold or powdery mildew is an issue, a milk-spray can be used (1 part whole fat cow’s milk to 4 parts water) weekly. The best solution of all, however, is prevention.
