Page 15 Foothills Sentry June 2023 COMMUNITY SPORTS BY CLIFF ROBBINS AND CHAD CLINE Foothill wins Softball Championship Foothill High School (24-6) captured the Division 4 CIF-SS Softball Championships over Fullerton High School, 5-3. It was Foothill’s second champion- ship, breaking the cycle of three runner-ups. The last champion- ship was in year 2000, a 1-0 win over Mater Dei. Starting Foothill pitcher Lauren Mendez went the distance, and was named Pitcher of the Game, striking out one, walking two and limiting Fullerton to seven hits. Foothill started the top of the order in the third inning with a single from Alley Storey up the middle. Storey was picked off for the first out. Julia Steinberg Cohen Gomez from Canyon High School pitched six solid innings, striking out five, and shutting out Crean Lutheran, 3-0, in the cham- pionship finals. Bottom of the fourth, Fullerton rallied for three runs on five hits. Julia Steinberg led off the top of the sixth with a single; Darian Rycroft got on first on an error, scoring Steinberg. Abigail Fryhoff singled, scoring Rycroft, and Eva Penaloza doubled, send- ing in two runs to tie the game. Storey led off the seventh, with a triple to left. Vargas singled and scored Storey; on the error, Var- gas took third. Rycroft singled, scoring pitch runner Calysta Ma- ciel. Mendez shut out Fullerton in the seventh to preserve the win.
