ElMo Nature Center renamed to honor founder The one-acre plot of native plants, mature trees, flowers, a 200-foot stream, wildlife and meandering paths adjacent to El Modena High School has been renamed the Jeanne Carter Na- ture Center in honor of its vision- ary founder. Carter was honored at a cer- emony hosted by the Orange Uni- fied School District, April 21, at the nature center she has nurtured for over 50 years. With the onset of Earth Day and the ensuing public interest in the environment, Carter, an ElMo chemistry teacher, started a class on that topic in 1972. Her students, she recalls, wanted to do more than talk about it. They wanted to see, touch and experi- ence nature and an unused lot on campus became their classroom. Stu- dents and community members planted native vegetation, tended to it and cared for the maturing trees. Boy Scouts earned Eagle Scout status with projects there; Girl Scouts created projects for the Gold Award. The center is not open to the public, but is a favorite field trip for elementary school classes. High School students, paired with elementary students, lead the tours, answer questions and encourage interactive activities. That is what is so unique about the Nature Center, Carter empha- sizes: the high school students are the docents for the younger kids. The center, the only one of its kind in Orange County, is also The Jeanne Carter Nature Center is home to sycamore, eucalyptus and redwoods. Native flowers bloom in the spring.
