A Pleasant(s) day in Arden by Andrew Tonkovich The Joseph Pleasants Stone House at Arden, the Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens, is now open to the pub- lic following a two-year restora- tion effort funded by a National Parks Service Grant. Sue McIntire of Modjeska, a retired OC Parks grant manager, helped secure National Parks funding for restoration through the highly competitive Save America’s Treasures federal grant program. The restoration required detailed labor by preservation ar- chitects and skilled experts. They stabilized the building, painstak- ingly took apart then restored and reassembled it piece by piece, and added a handsome public access staircase to the one-room upper floor above the storage and one-time natural refrigeration basement built into the hillside. The project had been deferred for 30 years, increasing the pos- sibility of degradation beyond repair. Parks staff had wanted to restore the cottage --- which Pleasants sold along with the sur- rounding property to Madame Sue McIntire of Modjeska admires the restoration of the historic Pleas- ants Stone House at Arden, the Helena Modjeska Historic House and Gardens.
