Foothill grad awarded P.E.O. scholarship Anh-Tho Nguyen, from Foot- hill High School, was awarded the P.E.O. IE STAR Scholarship for the 2019-20 academic year. She will attend the University of California, Riverside campus where she plans to study biology and economics. The P.E.O. $2,500 scholarship is based on excellence in leader- ship, extracurricular activities, community service, academics and potential for future success. The program is open to women who are citizens or legal per- manent residents of the United States or Canada. A student must be recommended by a P.E.O. chapter. The P.E.O. Sisterhood is an international philanthropic and educational organization that promotes educational opportuni- ties for women. There are nearly 6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada with almost 250,000 members. Graduating seniors from Girl Scout Service Unit 206-Santiago Creek, were honored with a drive- by parade on Sunday, June 7. The Girl Scouts, from El Mode- na, Foothill and Villa Park High, wore their respective school grad- uation caps and gowns outside the McPherson Magnet School as Senior Girl Scouts honored with parade Daisies on bicycles, friends and family and community supporters drove past with horns blasting, silly string flying, balloons float- ing and cheering filling the air. Many of the 13 graduates have participated in scouting since kin- dergarten, earning a plethora of badges and dedicating hundreds of hours of community service along the way. Scarlett Adams, from El Mode- na High, completed her Gold Award, the highest achievement within Girl Scouting. Parent volunteers, so important to the program, were also feted at the event. Recipients and their families had separate appointments, per social distanc- ing, at the library. There, former FOCAL President Kris Lasher, Young Adult Coordinator Anita Pierce and East Region Super- vising Librarian Cynthia Hicks Library teen volunteers receive scholarships presented a certificate and a $500 check to each graduating senior. Tess Vargha completed 231 hours of library service, and will attend Ensign Business College. Lorelai Schoch volunteered 213 hours, and will attend UCSD. Ju- lia Ota completed 132 hours of service, and will attend Santiago Canyon College. Nabhan Sazzad completed 107 hours, and will at- tend UCSD. FOCAL began its scholarship program last year, awarding two deserving teens from the class of 2019. Monies raised from FO- CAL book sales are returned to the Anaheim Hills community through support of library pro- grams and services, donations to local OUSD school libraries, and these generous scholarship awards.
