Although the ideal time to prune most species of tree is typically in its dormant phase, summer trims may cut down on the amount of pruning you’d have to do later in the year. Summer pruning takes away from the tree's total number of leaves, and fewer leaves mean less food flowing throughout the tree for next year's growth. Summer is the best time to remove dead tree branches because they’ll stand out most against the bright living branches but take it easy with those pruning shears. Just like a crash diet, excessive trimming of your tree is never good. Don’t take off more than 25% of the canopies leaves or you could compromise its health. Remove broken, hanging or otherwise weak branches and suckers, water-sprouts. Some trees that love a summer prune are Sappy hardwoods: You can prune maple, walnut and birch trees. Some prefer a summertime prune for these trees because they typically ooze sap when pruned in winter. If possible, you should not prune Oak trees at all during the summer to reduce the chance of oak wilt, which is a potentially fatal disease. If you have any questions or want help with your trees summer shape up, call us. When you go see the doctor and they prescribe you medication, notice how some meds are taken orally, some are rubbed on, some are injected? Ever wonder why there are different forms of applications? Well depending on what you need treatment for, the doctor will prescribe the recommended medication and application method. For your trees it’s no different! While spraying your trees may be the most common method of application, it doesn’t mean it’s the right form of application. When you spray a tree, especially a large one, think of how much of the tree isn’t reached! In order for it to be effective, every leaf, top and bottom should be sprayed till dripping. Chances of that being 100% get less and less the larger the tree is. But what if you injected the tree? A tree IV goes directly into the vascular system of the tree, therefore is not vulnerable to evaporation, rain, mammalian pests, birds, or overspray. Every milliliter of the product your tree needs is injected directly into the live tissue layers where the tree can translocate it throughout its system! So next time you need your trees treated, ask about a Tree IV! And if your current tree doctors aren’t familiar with it, give us a call! We are standing by to help! SUMMERTIME HAIRCUTS. Application Alternatives. Protect your pines from bark beetle!
