All of the essays were read, reviewed and rated by the Eddie Nash Board. Eight essays were selected for awards, each ranging from $1,000-$1,500; one scholarship of $5,000 was also given, for a total of $15,000. The other five foster youth received an honor- able mention. All of the awardees have com- pleted high school, and some are currently in college or have grad- uated with a bachelor’s degree. The keynote speaker and founder of the Eddie Nash Foundation was Bryan “Eddie” Nash, himself a prior foster youth who encour- aged the awardees not to focus on their bad past experiences, but to look forward to bright futures. The next awards ceremony is planned for the fall. The Eddie Nash Foundation works to empower foster youth and help provide the essential skills needed to live independent and productive lives; it is funded by donations, fundraisers and grants.
