Page 11 Foothills Sentry July 2023 SERVICE DIRECTORY Orange City firefighters grilled for a good cause Members of the Orange City Firefighters Local 2384 returned in a starring role at “Viva Las Vegas,” a fundraiser for Assistance League of Orange, and grilled dinner for 60 guests at the Villa Park home of Jim and Angela Fasbender. Elvis impersonator Martin Anthony played his role to perfection, providing the soundtrack for the evening and working the crowd, which included many other costumed Elvises. Volunteers hand-crafted the décor to turn the venue into a poolside version of Sin City, including record album plate chargers and centerpieces made out of stilettos and costume jewelry from the Assistance League Thrift Shop. Everyone got a chance to shine in the rock ‘n roll inspired photo booth. The Velvet Elvis cocktails and desserts inspired by the King’s favorite flavors – peanut butter & banana –didn’t disappoint. Planning committee leader Carolyn Seeley thanked the firefighters who volunteered for this duty on their time off, and reported the May 21 event raised funds for Assistance League’s philanthropic programs. Malaika Fortes, a 2023 Foothill High School graduate, was selected to receive a $2,500 STAR Scholarship from the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was recommended by P.E.O. Chapter IE of Orange. Fortes was on the Foothill varsity golf team, an Associated Student Body officer, active in National Charity League and an International Baccalaureate Sheryl Franke, P.E.O scholarship committee, Malakia Fortes, Kathy Cole, scholarship committee. Suzanne Vaugine was named Club Woman of the Year by the Woman’s Club of Orange. The honor is given to a member who is friendly, positive, welcoming to all, and donates her time, treasure and talents abundantly. The club reports that Vaugine fulfills all those requirements, and beyond. candidate. She will attend the University of Southern California as a student in the Marshall School of Business World Bachelor in Business program. The P.E.O. STAR Scholarship was established in 2009 for exceptional high school senior women to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the U.S. or Canada.
