The normal three seasons (fall, winter and spring) have been reduced to two seasons, each about 70 days. Championship events are reduced to one week for all sports. In the Southern Section, foot- ball practice is slated to begin Dec. 14, with the first game on Jan. 8. The shortened season will push sectional playoffs to March 19, 26 and April 2, with the CIF- SS finals on April 9/10, state championships April 16/17. Other fall sports are: field hock- ey, Dec. 18 - Feb. 27; cross-coun- try, Dec. 26 -March 5; gymnastics, Jan. 4 - March 6; boys volleyball, Dec. 12 - March 6; girls volley- ball, Dec. 19 to sectionals March 12/13; boys water polo, Dec. 21 to sectionals March 6; girls water polo, Dec. 28 to sectionals March 13. Competitive traditional cheer will have an April 17 cut-off. Spring sports will run as fol- lows: girls team tennis commenc- es Feb. 22, with section finals May 21, regional championships on June 5; boys and girls soccer, Feb. 26 to May 8, sectionals May 28/29, regionals June 5; boys team tennis March 1 to sectionals May 28; boys and girls wrestling, March 5 to meet championships May 15; softball begins March 19, sectionals on June 18/19, and regionals, June 26; boys and girls basketball, March 12 to section- als on June 11/12; boys and girls lacrosse play starts March 12 to June 12 sectionals; boys and girls swimming/diving, March 13 - May 22, with sectionals May 24-29; baseball begins March 19 to sectionals June 18/19 , region- als June 26; boys and girls golf, March 20 to state championships June 23; boys and girls track and field, March 20 - May 29, divi- sion championships June 12, state championships June 25/26. Previously, the same sport had alternate seasons for boys and girls. Schools may be pressed to find suitable practice areas and transportation for athletes, espe- cially with social distancing rules.
