DONATE . VOLUNTEER . Silverado-Modjeska Recreation & Parks District Candidates Celeste Goff Veerkamp I am Celeste Goff Veerkamp and I am running for the position of director, Silverado-Modjeska Recreation & Parks District. I relocated to Silverado from the South Bay beaches and have loved every minute of my “can- yon life.” My husband, Michael, and I have raised two incredible boys here who are just as passion- ate about our community. I am currently the director of medical staff at a local children’s hospital. I hold a bachelor’s de- gree in political science from Florida State University and a master’s degree in Health Care Administration from CSU Long Beach. There are so many things to love about our community; Girl Scouts selling baked goods to pay for a trip to the Bay Area, a homemade graduation ceremony during a pandemic, and getting to know neighbors who will move your horses in times of fire. How- ever, like many of you, I have grown dismayed to drive to see suburban development on our doorstep. Our beautiful area de- serves protection, and I am asking for your vote. Please join me so that we can, together, support and defend the Silverado-Modjeska Specific Land Use Plan. Thank you for your consideration. Julie "Rusty" Morris My name is Julie A. “Rusty” Morris, and I have been so for- tunate to live in Silverado since July of 1976. I have a B.A. in history from CSUF, where I also completed my education creden- tial. I have raised two boys and worked full-time as a public- school teacher for Garden Grove Unified School District. I have taught fourth grade, sixth grade, U.S. history, world history, Eng- lish, and ELD at the middle school level during my career. I recently retired after 28 years, and would be honored to devote time and energy to our unique canyon community as a director for the Silverado-Modjeska Rec- reation & Parks District. I am familiar with the history and contents of the Silverado- Modjeska Specific Land Use Plan, and I appreciate the value it maintains in preserving our can- yon quality of life. I have a determined interest in keeping our canyons rural and protected, while also encourag- ing visitors to enjoy our local businesses and talented artists. I believe I am well-qualified to un- dertake the responsibility in serv- ing as a director of the SMRPD, and hope to encourage more com- munity involvement and develop- ment of Recreation & Park’s re- sources. I would appreciate your vote. Michelle Agopian I love living in the Canyons. Silverado and Modjeska Canyons are the hidden gems of Orange County. As a wife, dog-mom, horse lover and canyon business owner, I have the same unique experiences each of you do fight- ing floods, fires and overdevelop- ment. COVID-19 has taught us that the recreation and preserva- tion of our trails and open spac- es is crucial to maintaining the health of our community. If you elect me to the SMRPD board I will: Increase opportunities for chil- dren at the Children’s Center; expand trails and access to open space; uphold the traditions of our unique and special canyon communities; ensure complete accountability with your taxpayer dollars; and safeguard our open spaces from the encroachment of outside special interests. Silverado, Modjeska, Ladd, Santiago and all canyons need experienced leadership to oper- ate and protect our community centers, parks, and open spaces. I will ensure SMRPD serves our families and our canyon commu- nities, and I won’t let SMRPD be- come a political tool for outside special interests. I’m an advocate for all canyon residents, and I’ll make decisions that benefit all residents. Please join my support- ers in voting for Michele Ago- pian. Assistance League of Orange Links to Learning Chair Kim Joffe, left, presents Cerro Villa Middle School band director Will Gearhart a $5,000 Links to Learning award for musical instruments as Principal Lisa Ogan looks on. Links to Learning fills the gap for students and teachers Assistance League of Orange’s Links to Learning program pro- vides awards to Orange Unified School District (OUSD) elemen- tary and middle school educa- tors to enhance curriculum and stimulate creative thought. These awards enable educators to enrich classroom instruction and extra- curricular activities and develop innovative approaches to learn- ing. Since 2011, more than $175,000 has been given to enrich students’ learning experiences, improve students’ achievement, or foster interdisciplinary study. In 2019, over 15,000 OUSD students ben- efited, as 59 teachers were award- ed a total of $30,000 in Links to Learning scholarships. Awards have been given for: classroom materials, original music compo- sition, district-wide science proj- ects, field trips and school-wide literacy programs. Assistance League is now so- liciting applications outlining projects and budgets from class- room teachers, school counselors, and media specialists. To be con- sidered for award money, the pro- gram/project request must direct- ly benefit and involve students; support and enhance school cur- riculum; help prepare students for their future; promote STEM and STEAM curriculum. Awards range from $50 to $500. Only one application is accepted per OUSD educator; applicants may team together for an award exceeding $500, but each applicant must ap- ply. Proposals will be reviewed in October, and awards presented in November. See the online ap- plication at assistanceleague.org/ orange/links-to-learning. Trustee resigns from OUSD Trustee Brenda Lebsack re- signed from the Orange Uni- fied School Board of Education, Aug. 5, after learning that a move of two blocks put her out of the district she was elected to serve. Lebsack moved her residence in April, but no one realized she no longer lived in Trustee Area 6. The district continued to mail board materials to her new ad- dress in Orange. It was not until she went to the Registrar of Vot- ers to file her papers to again run in Area 6, that she learned she now lived outside the boundary. She alerted OUSD and resigned immediately.
