Hence, many of us need to limit our break-from-the-kitchen treats. But not all is gloom. Let me tell you about a little, probably not-so-well-kept secret that is also affordable. In case you have not yet discovered “Fresh Off the Boat,” may I recommend that you give it a try. This little bistro really qualifies as a hole-in-the-wall, but a great one. As its title suggests, fish has a starring role on the menu, but don’t be discouraged if you are not into eating denizens of the deep – there are plenty more choices including chicken, lamb, carnitas and filet. For such a small establishment, the variety is surprising. A Mediterranean style permeates throughout, and everything is very fresh. The appetizers include hummus and/or tzatziki with pita and dalmas, along with shrimp ceviche, ahi poke, fried cauliflower and a variety of sliders. Soup might be green lentil or Cajun fish tortilla. Entrees from the charbroiler are served in generous portions with herbed rice, veggies and a small salad. Choices include grilled cod, salmon or barramundi, seared ahi, battered or grilled shrimp, mahi mahi or fish and chips. Meats also prepared on the broiler are chicken, sirloin or filet mignon kabobs, carnitas, lamb gyro, with vegetarian choices, falafel and veggie/feta. Bowls piled with fish or meat selections noted above, together with rice, pinto beans, cabbage, jack cheese and pico de gallo are also popular. Or perhaps you’d rather have a whole-meal salad, a soft taco or a pita wrap -- all an equally delicious way to enjoy the café’s specialty broiler fare. Your biggest problem may be a decision. My friend Marilyn is gradually eating her way through the menu, which isn’t a bad idea. My personal favorites are any variety of the salmon, barramundi or grilled shrimp. Whatever your choice, I think you will agree that the servings are quite generous, fresh and a reasonable price. If you do have a little space left, try some homemade baklava or a banana banoffee. There are, of course, a range of soft drinks, mineral waters, wine and beer. Prices range from $11- 30, with just a few options at the high end. Fresh Off the Boat is open seven days a week, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Half a dozen tables on the sidewalk expand the seating capacity. The cheerful staff will efficiently pack your meal to be ready for take-out, (714) 544- 1900 or fobfishgrill.com, or via Grubhub. You’ll find this little café at 17582 E. 17th Street in Oak Tree Plaza, which is one short block east of Yorba. Bon Appetit! And be sure to tell these friendly folk that they were recommended by the Foothills Sentry. Villa Park Women’s League plans full fall The first General Meeting for the 2023-24 Villa Park Women's League will be Thursday, Sept. 7. Hors d'oeuvres and libations will be served. The meeting will also feature representatives from neighborhood schools and Villa Park City Manager Steve Franks to discuss happenings in the city. Kiwanis Club of Orange braves the rain The Orange Kiwanis Club served up the last of its hot dogs, burgers, chips, and other goodies at the eighth and final Concert in the Park, Aug. 9, at Grijalva Park. It doesn’t happen often in August, but around 6 p.m. it started to rain. Out came the tarps and umbrellas, but no one left -- in fact, more people kept coming. The Kiwanis Club, along with the Key Clubs it supports, has been providing the food for the Concerts in the Park series every Wednesday, from June until August, for several years. Over the course of the 2023 season, the club served close to 2,000 hot dogs, Polish dogs and burgers to spectators who came Ladies of Kiwanis Club of Orange braving the elements are, left to right, Kathy Clements, Debbie Booth, Shannon Tucker, Rhonda Weiss, Lucy Castillo, Christa Wolfinbarger and Cianna Fahmy. to Hart, El Camino, and Grijalva Parks to enjoy the live music. The club depends on the in- come from this food service as its main fund-raising event. Kiwanis and Key Club members donate their time and effort to pull it off.
