Foothills Sentry Page 9 October 2020 Your Voice Fighting for Families In District 5 FPCC ID: 1426307 VOTE ON OR BEFORE NOVEMBER 3 RD Ad Paid for by the Campaign of Ana Gutierrez for Orange City Council 2020 ANAFORORANGE.COM Occupation: Mayor, City of Or- ange / Businessman Born and raised in Orange, it is my privilege to serve as your mayor and councilman. Together, we have worked to increase fiscal responsibility while maintaining our strong police and fire depart- ments. I have kept my pledge to fight taxes (protecting Prop 13) while securing additional re- sources to support residents and businesses during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. I ask for your support to elect me as your mayor. We will con- tinue to fight for a safe, financial- ly secure community. My career in business gives me the practi- cal experience to lead Orange through these challenging times. Our city can only accommodate responsible growth. We must re- duce traffic congestion, address our homelessness issue and pre- serve the history of our great city. With your help, we will keep Or- ange among the best communities while teaming with our schools to benefit our kids with programs and opportunities. My service has earned the endorsements of Supervisor Don Wagner, Mayor Tita Smith, Councilmembers Kim Nichols, Mike Alvarez and Chip Monaco, City of Orange Police Association and the Orange City Firefighters. markamurphy.com Mark A. Murphy It’s time for change! Let’s re- boot and raise the bar. I’ve lived in Orange for 34 years and own a home near Gri- jalva Park. I am a small business owner, city planner, graduate of Leadership Orange, past president of the Orange Community Histor- ical Society, and I’ve served you nearly 12 years on the Planning Commission and Design Review Committee. My top priority is to keep Or- ange safe and feeling secure. My vision includes expanding busi- ness, growing the city responsi- bly, reducing traffic, improving code enforcement, and address- ing our open space deficit and ag- ing infrastructure. I enjoy solving problems. I’m fiscally responsible, and will pro- tect our neighborhoods and qual- ity of life. High density has its place, not within single-family neighborhoods. I believe in a higher calling and doing what’s right. I’ll rely on facts, fairness, excellence, com- munity input, and move the city we all love forward. Orange stands at a crossroads. What is your hope and vision for the future? If you want change, no obligations to outside influ- ences that hold us back, I humbly ask for your vote. gladsonfororange.com Adrienne Gladson Orange Election 2020 Mayor Theresa Denton brought daughter Cora, 6, a kindergartener at Villa Park Elementary, and pups Violet and Oliver to clean up her campus during Villa Park Community Services Foundation (VPCSF) Clean- Up Day, Sept. 19. SCC students chronicle COVID experience By Kathy Hall It began as an English class assignment at Santiago Canyon College: learn how to conduct historical research using first-per- son accounts from letters, essays, journals and diaries. It ended as a published book of students’ ac- counts of their experiences con- fronting COVID-19. The book, “Echoes of the Can- yon,” is a compilation of letters, journal entries, short stories, and poems written by over 100 Eng- lish Department students and stu- dents participating in the spring 2020 Umoja Learning Commu- nity. Some wrote about friends and family members lost to the pan- demic, while others described their daily, self-imposed decon- tamination rituals designed to keep elderly or pregnant relatives safe from the virus. All had their college year dis- rupted by the move from in-class to remote instruction. Many faced complicating circumstances. The students are donating all net profits from its sale to the Hawk’s Nest Food Pantry at San- tiago Canyon College. For more information on the book or to purchase copies, go to sccollege.edu/echoes.
