Student coordinates blood drive to benefit cancer warriors By Tabitha Finamore When we learned that my little cousin Quincy, 7, was no longer in remission from his leukemia and would have to go through treatment again, I knew I had to do something more to help. During Quincy’s first round of chemo, which happened during COVID, we learned that the Red Cross was short on blood supply. They still are, and cancer warriors need regular transfusions. I, per- sonally, cannot donate because I was born in the United Kingdom, and lived there with my family for four years. We could be potential carriers of “mad cow disease.” I contacted our local Red Cross, and after about nine phone calls with Tram, my Red Cross Rep, I realized we could use the multipurpose room in my old school, Villa Park Elementary, to host a blood drive in support of cancer warriors. In the process of getting OUSD to sign off on the use of the space, I learned there was a third grader fighting childhood cancer at VPE. The drive is now set as an annual event with the Red Cross, to be held every October at VPE, This year, the drive will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 11 from 8 a.m.- 2 p.m. at Villa Park Elementary. If you would like to donate, please contact my mom, Kim Barks at (714) 315-9872; she can help you book your 15-minute appointment. Tabitha, a senior at OCSA, coordinated this event in only a few days. ACTION!
