The Orange County Chapter of the California Turtle and Tor- toise Club (CTTC) is beginning a year-long “Shellabration” in honor of its 60th anniversary. The nonprofit, with 14 chapters in the state, is dedicated to turtle and tortoise preservation, conserva- tion, education and support. The Orange County Chapter meets the first Friday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at First Chris- tian Church of Orange, 1130 E. Walnut Avenue. Ginny Doepping of Gzsafaripark Reptile Rescue will be the featured speaker on Oct. 6. She has over 20 years of experience with all types of rep- tiles, including the care and feed- ing of Sulcatas. Sulcatas start out as palm-sized babies, but can quickly reach over 200 pounds, surprising their unsuspecting owners. Then, unfortunately, many may need rehoming. Thus, the need for education and dispelling misinformation. The chapter also works to res- cue and rehome tortoises and turtles. Desert tortoises have become endangered, as ravens that were lured to the Sonora or Mojave Deserts by fast food lit- ter, learned to attack a clutch of turtles as they emerge from their shells. Linda Grunnet, vice presi- dent of the chapter, says, “CTTC is here if you see a hurt tortoise. CTTC will care for it. If it’s healthy, it may be microchipped, so check with a vet. Put up fly- ers, as they are escape artists, and it may live in the neighborhood. Do NOT release it in a pond.” The meetings are always in- teresting and informative, They have tagged tortoises with IDs, even held a beauty contest. In November, exotic pet vet Dr. Chase Baldwin, who studied rep- tiles in Australia, will speak. New members are always welcome, and will receive the “Tortuga Gazette,” plus access to care and adoption informa- tion, a help line, link to world- wide resources, and meeting and event information. Membership is $25/year or $35 per family per year. See tortoise.org . This skateboarder is Bert, a young Sulcata owned by Nathan, 10. He won “Best Accessorized” at a club costume contest.
