Niche.com rated SCC the eighth-best community college among 118 in California, and ranked it #16 among 755 com- munity colleges surveyed in America, according to its recently released 2025 list. The 2025 Niche.com rankings were a significant increase from the previous year, when SCC was ranked #51 in the nation and #16 in California among its peer col- leges. The rankings were compiled with an emphasis on academ- ic quality, student and faculty achievement and post-graduate earnings, diversity, quality of in- struction and student life, using the most recent provisional data available from multiple sources, including the Integrated Postsec- ondary Education Data System through the National Center for By Kate Bonnaud One of Marian Levitt's most cherished traditions is dressing up as the "Witch of Broadmoor" every Halloween. For genera- tions, she has delighted children with her costume, creating magi- cal memories that have become a celebrated part of the commu- nity's Halloween celebrations. At 94, Marian is the original owner of her 1977 Broadmoor home, and embodies the OPA spirit. She was recently honored for her commitment to her com- munity by being named an OPA 4th of July Parade Marshal. Born to immigrant parents, Marian understood the value of hard work and perseverance from an early age. She channeled these values into a 66-year career as a bilingual elementary school teacher. Marian's personal life has been as rich and fulfilling as her pro- fessional one. She was married to Neil Levitt until his passing in 2002, and together they raised four children. Today, Marian en- joys the companionship of Herb Scharlin, with whom she shares her home. Her family now in- cludes three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. An active and beloved figure in OPA, Marian is a regular at bunco games and a dedicated member of the OPAWomen's League. Her presence is a highlight at the Con- certs in the Park, where her lively spirit and enduring enthusiasm are always appreciated. Far from being a Silent Woman of the Silent Generation (theme of the 4th of July parade), Marian Levitt's life is a tapestry woven with threads of dedication, love, and community service. Her legacy as an educator, mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, and community pillar is a testament to a life well- lived. Her story continues to in- spire all who have the privilege of knowing her. Education Statistics and the Of- fice of Post-Secondary Education through the U.S. Department of Education. “The rankings amongst com- munity colleges in the nation and state, as well as in comparison to our peers in Orange County, serve as a confirming snapshot of the passion and commitment of our students, faculty, classified professionals and administrators working in unison to provide the best in service and academics,” said SCC President Jeannie G. Kim, Ph.D. “As our motto says, what happens at SCC matters, as we continue to serve our commu- nity members who seek to take courses and complete degrees and certifications for upward economic and job mobility; work with industries, such as health- care, to meet regional workforce development needs; as well as those students looking for direct transfer pathways to four-year institutions, such as UCLA, UCI, USC, Stanford, Harvard, CSUF and others.” Good golly Miss Molly! And Sharkey! These two beautiful gold- ens are looking for their furever families. Miss Molly is a lovely 10-year-old with a zest for life. She is in a foster home and prov- ing to be a gracious guest, with excellent house manners. She LOVES going for walks, but, most importantly, thrives on love and attention. Sharkey is seven years old, loves belly rubs, getting brushed, car rides and going for walks. A charming fellow, he wants to be at your feet, and will alert when someone approaches your home. Though he enjoys playing ball, he is not a good catcher, and would prefer you roll the ball to his feet. A loving companion, he loves people, but should be the only dog in the home. For information about these and other adoptable goldens, go the Orange County-based golden retriever rescue, GRCGLARes- cue.org or email info@grcglares- cue.org . Fosters and donations allow the Rescue to help more animals – consider opening your heart to help.
