OCEXCEL.COM REAL ESTATE First female engineer on board at Irvine Railroad By Andie Mills The popular, family friendly Irvine Park Railroad in Irvine Re- gional Park now boasts its first fe- male engineer. Cathy Meyer, one of eight state certified engineers, runs the train through the historic regional park on a daily basis. Her train career began as some- what of a joke. Meyer was an investigator with the Orange Po- lice Department, involved with domestic violence issues, run- away juveniles and monitoring sex offenders before she retired in August, after 29.5 years. One of her civilian volunteers was an en- gineer for the train and suggested she apply. She laughed about it, but applied when he brought in the application. Meyer was surprised to be ac- cepted, and has worked to com- plete her training over the last four years. She had to learn about the instruments, maintenance is- sues and, a top priority, safety. Applicants must successfully Crescendo Chapter features Best Actor in “Les Miserables” complete some 60 runs first as a conductor, then as an engineer, in order to be state certified. Every engineer must be recertified an- nually. Now, she works with “pleasant and excited” adults and children, and “the nicest group to work for and with.” Once her peers real- ized her capabilities, she was ac- cepted, though, the running joke is that she should have to wear a white beard to fit in with the other male engineers. Meyer is proud to be the first female engineer, opening the doors for other women to enter the field; the railroad has recently hired two additional female engi- neers. Mothers love that she is a female. She often overhears them whispering to their daughters, “See, girls can be anything they want.” The family-owned Irvine Park Railroad was begun in 1996, and is a 1/3-scale train that takes visitors on a one-mile, 12-minute loop through Irvine Park. Avail- able for birthday parties and group events, the railroad also offers such seasonal events as the Pumpkin Patch, the Christmas Train (to see Santa) and an Easter Eggstravaganza. Concert soloist Ivan Rutherford will be the celebrity speaker at the Crescendo Chapter of the Guilds of Segerstrom Center for the Arts’ Thursday, Jan. 14 program. Rutherford has performed the role of Jean Valjean in “Les Miserables” over 2,300 times on Broadway and on a national tour. He has also had major roles in “West Side Story,” “South Pa- cific” and “Titanic.” He currently performs locally. This first celebrity speaker se- ries of 2021 will be held at 10 a.m. at the Bowers Museum Nor- ma KershawAuditorium, 2002 N. Main Street. Tickets are $30 general admis- sion and for Crescendo Chap- ter members. Bowers Museum members may buy one discount- ed ticket for $20. Students with valid student ID may purchase tickets for $25 each or three for $20. For information about Bow- ers membership and student tick- ets, contact Mary Staton, (714) 544-5549. Parking is $6. The Guilds of Segerstrom, in- cluding the Crescendo Chapter, raise funds to support the Center’s community engagement and arts education programs, which each year serves more than 360,000 young people, families, and edu- cators throughout Orange County and other California counties.
