Tony will always be remem- bered for his magnificent tenor voice, which was his hallmark and with which he graced VPWL community shows. He had been a resident of Villa Park since 1973. Tony was born on December 13, 1929 in New Haven, Michi- gan, the third of six children of Eugene and Alice Paleno. He was predeceased by his parents; sisters Virginia and Mary; and brother Lou. Upon graduating from high school, Tony attended the Law- rence Institute of Technology in Detroit and then served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1954 during the Korean War. In 1958, he received a Bach- elor of Science degree in mechan- ical engineering at the University of Idaho. He was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity. In later years, he earned a master’s degree from USC. Tony attended the First Presbyterian Church of Orange and was a member of the Santa Ana Elks Club. Tony met the love of his life Ja- nette (Jan) Heath, while attending college, and they were married on June 11, 1960. They recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. He was a loving father to Robert Paleno (Laura), Laurie Kinds- father (Bob), and David Paleno; a proud grandfather to Caylie, Grant and Erich Kindsfather, Alicia and Bobby Paleno. He will be sadly missed by his sister, Jan- ice Collett, brother Gene, and his many nieces and nephews. Tony spent his entire 40-year career working as an aeronautical engineer for McDonnell Douglas and Boeing. He had many accom- plishments during his career, but the most notable ones were being a member of the team that worked on the Apollo 11 rocket launch in 1969 that put the first man on the moon; working on the launch of the Saturn rocket, part of which was built using a system named after him, “The Paleno Block System;” all of the space shuttle missions in the 80s; and the Inter- national Space Station in the 90s. Tony always called himself “Jack of all trades, master of none,” but in reality, he truly was a master of all trades. There’s nothing he couldn’t do. He had a pilot’s license and loved building and flying model airplanes at a lo- cal park. He built, from scratch, a Boeing World War II P-26 and won first place in the first Ana- heim Convention Center’s Hobby Show. Tony could completely take apart a car engine and put it back together without a manual, and always kept the family cars running. One of his many hobbies was to fully restore automobiles, including a 1930 Model A Ford, 1960 Corvette, 1965 Ford Mus- tang Fastback and, his favorite, a 1948 Buick Super convertible. Tony entered his Buick in many car shows, often winning first place. After 30 years of owner- ship, the car was sold to Art As- tor’s Museum in Anaheim. The museum originally had 275 clas- sic cars, and Tony’s ’48 Buick became known as one of Art’s “Devotion Collection,” consist- ing of 14 automobiles. Art felt so passionately about these cars, he drove them often and kept them the closest to him until the end of his life. Tony had many interests and hobbies, but music and singing were his true passions. There was nothing he wanted to do more than sing. Over the years, he per- formed in musicals with the Bur- bank Civic Light Opera, Thou- sand Oaks Community Choir, church choirs, piano bars, Villa Park events and the Singer’s Sa- lon in Long Beach. Tony will be forever remem- bered for his beautiful voice, in- fectious smile and unconditional love for his family and friends. A private graveside service was held for the family at Fairhaven Memorial Park on Oct. 17. A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date for his family and many friends.
