OHS '71 class together again By Melinda Sammons The Orange High School class of 1971 celebrated its 50-year re- union on Sept. 18 at the Double- tree Hotel in Orange. One hundred and forty class- mates, spouses and friends en- joyed dinner, dancing and live 70s music. Renewing friendships, reminiscing and sharing memo- ries of days past highlighted the evening. In welcoming one another, ev- eryone in the large room erupted into singing the Alma Mater. It was a special moment. Everyone was sorry to see the night end. Orange High School 1975 graduate Mayor Mark Murphy congratulated the alumni with a proclamation declaring, “Sep- tember 18 as Orange High School Class of 1971 Day.” Surprised reunion committee head Kathy Grant accepted the award from the mayor. Some may remember Grants Garage off of Glassell Street in downtown Or- ange. Owned and operated for de- cades by her father Tommy, who also graduated from Orange High School in 1943. Costume contest added to Dino Dash The Tustin Public Schools Foundation will sponsor a Hal- loween costume contest at the 30th annual Dinosaur Dash on Sun., Oct. 31. The contest will be hosted by retired Tustin Unified School Dis- trict Director of Communications Mark Eliot - The King of Hal- loween. Costumed creatures will line up at 9:45 a.m. at The Mar- ket Place and will walk across the stage one at a time. Awards and prizes will be given to "Best Costume" winners in children and adult categories. Neessen honored with Presidential Award The Orange Elks Lodge was honored to present longtime member Bill Neessen with a Pres- idential Volunteer Service Award, authorized by the White House and approved by the President. This lifetime achievement award requires a minimum of 4,000 volunteer hours in service. Neessen far exceeded the require- ment with nearly 10,000 volun- teer hours serving the Orange Elks Lodge and its varied com- munity events, the Brea Police Department and Youth Basketball across the West Coast. Neessen is a shining example of volunteerism in service to his community and the Elks are ex- proud to call him their brother. The award was presented at the Orange Lodge and was celebrat- ed by the many visiting dignitar- ies and members of other Elk's lodges from throughout Orange County. The Orange Elks Lodge and its Drug Awareness Program are among a select group of organiza- tions in the U.S. that are approved to submit applicants for this pres- tigious award.
