William “Bill” Zakowicz 1929-2021 William “Bill” P. Zakowicz, Jr., 91, of Villa Park passed away Oct. 2 from complications of Al- zheimer’s disease. Born in 1929 in Philadelphia to William and Anna Zakowicz, Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sherry, by his daughter Sheryl, son-in- law Jean-Marie Autran and his son Ken Williams. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Chloe and Chris Collins, Wesley Autran, Kevin Autran and great- granddaughter Margaux. After graduation from high school, Bill went to work for a small electronics company and also joined the Navy Reserve, where he was called to active duty during the Korean War. He served as an Aviation Electronics- man flying in Navy Anti-subma- rine Warfare Patrol Aircraft. After his discharge in 1952, he attended Carnegie Institute of Technol- ogy (Carnegie Mellon) where he earned both BSEE and MSEE degrees. There he met his wife Sherry. Upon obtaining his MS degree in 1957, he went to work for the Douglas Aircraft Co. in Los An- geles as an Electronic Systems Engineer working on new mili- tary aircraft. In 1965, Bill joined his childhood friendAmar Bose in the founding of the Bose Corpo- ration in Natick, MA. He served as President during the initial de- velopment and marketing of Bose High Fidelity Audio Equipment. In 1967, he went west once again and rejoined McDonnell Douglas in Long Beach. There he held a variety of positions until he re- tired in April 1997 as Director for Advanced Military Programs. Bill had a strong sense of curi- osity and always wanted to learn new things. From his early years as a pilot, he would go on to learn mechanics and fix his own cars. He learned to play golf, and he es- pecially loved fishing. He would study acupuncture, biorhythm and take dance lessons with his wife Sherry. They would also travel the world together and dis- cover new lands and cultures. He was a good and honest man who loved his family more than any- thing else, and he will be deeply missed. Bill will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the River- side National Cemetery on Nov 4. In lieu of flowers, the family re- quests donations to the Alzheim- er’s Association at www.alz.org .
