SCC women’s soccer remains #1 and undefeated Santiago Canyon Women’s Soccer team played to a 0-0 tie against Saddleback College, Oct. 8. Both teams came in undefeat- ed, SCC, 7-0, and Saddleback, 9-0, with both teams not giving up a goal this season. It was a de- fensive battle as both goalkeep- ers were well tested. Santiago Canyon goalkeeper Zaydee Solis saved six goals. Santiago held the state’s No. 2 scorer Maliyah Medley to just four shots on goal. Santiago was able to get a shot off by Summer Stewart and Cassie Lewis. Five freshmen, two from El Modena and three from Canyon High School, may look forward to plenty of playing time. They are Kiera Hanna and Cassie Lew- is from El Modena, Ally Gorsha, Kylee Medlin and Jordan Wood from Canyon High. Santiago Canyon was ranked No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the state, and Saddleback was ranked No. 7 in the nation and No. 4 in the state. Santiago will host Saddleback in the season rematch November 2 at 3 p.m. Top white hat gets Distinguished Service Award E. M. “Speed” Castillo, known for his 47 years of officiating high school and college football and basketball in Orange County, was decorated with the 2020 CIF Dis- tinguished Service Award, Oct. 13, at the Grand Hotel in Long Beach. Castillo turned 91 in March and celebrated with 300 of his closest friends. Castillo began teaching in the Anaheim Union High School District at Orange View Junior High. In 1994, he was named one of the 10 most influential people in Orange County sports. In 2004, Castillo was named the California Coaches Association Official of the Year. CIF Girls Volleyball Playoffs Foothill (14-11), captured the Crestview League and faced Notre Dame Academy (13-12) in the first round of playoffs in CIFSS, Division 2. In Division 3, Orange Lutheran (22-9) trav- eled in the first round to Valley Christian (18-12); in Division 5, El Modena (11-12) faced Crean Lutheran (18-5).
