The exhibit, “Peter Carr: Artist for Survival,” is the first com- prehensive art historical retro- spective of the poet, activist, and outsider artist, Peter Carr (1925- 1981). It features a wide range of his large-scale paintings, fre- netic drawings and homemade political posters, as well as his own personal notebooks, inti- mate sketches and studies, self- published books, and other bio- graphically significant ephemera. Tonkovich, a self-described expert and archivist of the art- ist’s work, was mentored by Carr until his unexpected death at age 56. Tonkovich writes, ”I’d lived for decades with a representative sampling of these tattered pen and ink drawings, oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, and writ- ings, perhaps a couple dozen hung in every room of my family home. All were made by the late Dr. Harry ‘Peter’ Carr. He was, years ago, my Comp Lit profes- sor, a larger-than-life fellow of small stature, if also terrific self- esteem, who created in whatever medium he found handy. “He scribbled, typed, drew, painted (even on cardboard and plywood), was perhaps a bit manic or only urgently, unceas- ingly productive. Just as well, because he died, suddenly, with no plan for any of it, not the life’s work, unpublished mem- oirs, scribbled notes, audio tapes, anticipated triumphant gallery She has appeared on televi- sion, and is the singing voice of the fairy Lyria in the Tinker Bell series of films for Disney Anima- tion. Garnye has sung with nu- merous symphony orchestras across the globe and performed on both the Oscars and the Emmy Awards. She has performed with Josh Groban, Carole King, Kris- tin Chenoweth and jazz legend Dave Brubeck, and has been blessed to grace the stage at the Hollywood Bowl 11 times. The program will begin at 10 a.m. at the Bowers Museum, 2002 N. Main Street, Santa Ana. Tickets are $45, general admis- sion. Bowers members may buy a ticket for $35. Thirty years later all of it came to me.” Carr created a seemingly end- less array of idiosyncratic im- ages, all constructed using his own expressionistic visual style. Frequently, Carr would liberally inscribe his drawings and paint- ings with handwritten textual fragments, pulled from his own poetic compositions and meant to variously imply an internal monologue, overheard conversa- tions, and/or omniscient narra- tion. Carr was a co-founder of the Orange County chapter of the Al- liance for Survival, and creator of its local spinoff, Artists for Survival, as well as the posthu- mous eponym for the Peter Carr Peace Center at Cal State Long Beach. Carr regularly deployed his inspired writing, challenging imagery, and satirical wit in the service of much bigger causes, hoping to engage likeminded cre- atives on the issues to which he so dedicated his personal life and professional career. A longtime resident of Laguna Beach, Carr’s visual and poetic compositions employed subtle gestures, both provocative and profound, to present his own acute social observations on the beauty and the absurdity of ev- eryday life along the California coast in the 1970s. “Peter Carr: Artist for Surviv- al” is open through Dec. 13 at the Cerritos College Fine Arts Build- ing, Room 107, 11110 Alondra Blvd., Norwalk.
