OCEXCEL.COM Elk Heidi Falcon and her daughter Sierra deliver dictionaries. Elks alter dictionary project The way of doing things has changed due to the COVID pan- demic. The Elks Third Grade Dic- tionary Program is an example. In the past, the Elks hand-delivered a dictionary to every third grader in the City of Orange. This year, the Elks were unable to give them directly to the students, but deliv- ered them to the schools. The Elks have delivered over 32,000 dictionaries to Orange third graders during the past 15 years. This year, 2,184 dictionar- ies were delivered to 27 schools, including hotel children and the OC Academy. The dictionary becomes the student’s own to keep with them as they advance through their school years. Octogenarian medals in world cycling events Orange resident Phil Knoll, 85 years young, earned two new first place medals at the Hunts- man World Senior Games in St. George, Utah. Knoll rode his re- cumbent bike in the 85-89 year- old category, beating the record time in the Hill Climb by two sec- onds, and in the Time Trial by 34 seconds. He beat his own person- al best and recorded better times than many riders several decades younger. Knoll now has a total of 14 medals from seven years at the Huntsman, and holds the record times in the 75-79, 80-84 and 85- 89 age categories for his events. Phil Knoll taught band and orchestra for 40 years in OUSD schools, and raised funds for his music programs by doing long- distance bike riding. In 1982, he rode from Orange to Hampton, S. Carolina – over 2,300 miles. Phil Knoll displays his latest gold medals from the Huntsman World Games. Knoll concentrates on winning the Hill Climb.
