Assistance League ramps up Operation School Bell Handy Elementary School Health Clerk Roberta Goins, Office Man- ager Nicole Rostom and Prin- cipal Erika Krohn with uniform donations. The Operation School Bell pro- gram, coordinated and funded by Assistance League of Orange, has already served as many students in the Orange Unified School District this fall, as during the en- tire prior school year. This local program, part of a nationwide Assistance League effort, offers new school uniforms, backpacks, books and supplies to children in need. The program was recently revamped, and is now able to more efficiently equip more students for success in school. Volunteers now pack a customized set of new clothes for each student, including sized- to-fit uniform tops and bottoms, a sweatshirt, socks and underwear, and deliver everything to 18 schools. For students at non-uniform schools, Assistance League of Or- ange hosts several school clothes shopping nights at JC Penneys. “The need is greater than ever,” according to program co-chair Jean Wagne. Maria Espinosa of Jordan El- ementary, reports that “Many families would not be able to pro- vide new clothes for these kids without the help of Assistance League, and that makes a differ- ence in how these students show up each day.” Wagner and her team of volunteers have not turned away any requests from schools thus far, but she does expect to stretch her budget to its limit. "There are schools in Orange that have so much need that we could meet if we had a larger budget." Wagner says. Each outfitting of a student costs over $100. Tax deductible year-end donations to help underwrite the work of Assistance League of Orange are welcome, and can be made online at AssistanceLeague.org/Orange. A $100 gift will help put a smile on the face of a child. Author Michelle Huneven will be the featured guest at the Villa Park Library on Saturday, Dec. 10 at 2 p.m. Her latest work, “Search: A Novel” is a wry and witty tale that will speak to any- one who has gone searching. She is a James Beard Award-winning author, and her food writing and the recipes she incorporates into this fictional memoir add flavor. “S’Mitten with Books” is a family program that will be held on Thursday, Dec. 8 from 4-5 p.m. All ages are welcome to join in the winter fun, with stories, ac- tivities and a craft. The Villa Park Library is lo- cated at 17865 Santiago Blvd, in the Villa Park Towne Center. For questions, contact Librarian Kris- tina Jones at (714) 998-0861.
