Veterans honored at City of Orange annual ceremony Veterans representing the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and Coast Guard gathered at the Orange Depot Park Veterans Me- morial, Nov. 11, to be recognized and thanked for their service. The event featured patriotic music, a welcome by Mayor Dan Slater, color guard, flag folding ceremony and keynote address by retired Brigadier General Robin Umberg. She was introduced by her hus- band State Senator Tom Umberg (D-34). Umberg, one of only a few fe- male generals, spoke about how the role of women in the military has changed since she joined in 1974. She noted that women have always served in one role or an- other (passing as men during the Civil War), but didn’t get credit until the WAVES WACS and WASPs were created in WWII. Those separate services ended with the WACS dissolution in 1978. When she was starting her ca- reer in the Army, women did not become generals. “I never even thought about it,” she recalls. In today’s military, there are no separate services and women and men serve together. “It’s now a band of brothers and sisters.” Photos, past and present, of Orange servicemen and women were displayed at the Depot Park Veterans Tribute. Keynote speaker retired Brigadier General Robin Umberg shared the progression of women in the military. Nathan Sammons was the lone representative of the U.S. Coast Guard at the Orange Veterans Day celebration. He stood proudly when his service was recognized. Photos by Tony Richards
