Some SCC students do not have permanent housing, with many living in cars or "couch surfing." The Women's League is con- ducting a hygiene drive to collect these items at its meetings and throughout the year. There is a donation container at Villa Park City Hall to collect unopened products; both full-size or travel- sized. Items may be dropped off through Friday, Dec. 15. During the holiday season, the community is reminded to view the Community Holiday Forest outside of City Hall, with trees decorated by VPWL activity groups and civic organizations. At the league's second Gener- al Meeting of the year, Nov. 16, members shared what they were thankful for this season, and in- dulged in great wine, chili, des- sert and friendships. New rosters were distributed; contact Membership Chair Lo- rena Shaver about a roster and membership. See vpwl.org . Orange Elks continue annual Dictionary Project As it has for the past 17 years, the Orange Elks gave a dictionary to every third grade student in the Orange Unified School District. Since the Dictionary Project's in- ception, the Elks have delivered over 35,000 dictionaries. This year, 16 members stamped 2,000 dictionaries with the Elks logo; 20 members delivered the dictionaries to over 1,900 stu- dents. A flyer was included with each book, advising district students about the upcoming Hoop Shoot and Soccer Shoot competitions, two sports-oriented programs the Elks coordinate for Orange youth. Gypsum Canyon wilderness now open A ribbon-cutting ceremony for Orange County’s new Gypsum Canyon Wilderness was held Nov. 14. The 500-acre property, located within OC Parks’ Irvine Ranch Open Space, features six miles of trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding, along with lookout points that offer views of the surrounding canyons and Santa Ana Mountains. The canyon opened to the public Nov. 17 and is accessible through sched- uled or self-guided programs with advance registration. Native habitat and wildlife populations will be considered when determining future access opportunities. See ocparks.com . The Elks Dictionary Project stampers Benefactors boost Chapman University business and science programs Chapman University an- nounced a transformative gift of $10 million from the Argyros family, which has led to the el- evation of the George L. Argyros School of Business and Econom- ics to the George L. Argyros Col- lege of Business and Economics. The latest gift has propelled the Argyros School to college status, encompassing various schools dedicated to research and teach- ing, including the newly estab- lished Burra School of Account- ing and Finance. The donation will help Argyros College reach its goal of becoming one of the nation's top 50 business schools. In recent years, the Argyros School has climbed more than 25 places in national rankings. Just last May, it moved from number 72 up to 60 in the Best Business Schools rankings by U.S. News & World Report. This significant contribution aligns with Chapman Univer- sity's strategic plan goal of rais- ing $500 million through its “Inspire” campaign to support academic excellence. To date, more than $357 million has been raised, Aspiring young scientists pur- suing education at Chapman Uni- versity have a new opportunity to fuel their dreams, courtesy of the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation and its longest-serv- ing board member. The founda- tion unveiled a $1 million endow- ment, establishing the Wescombe STEM Scholarship at Chapman University’s Schmid College of Science and Technology. This scholarship, honoring retir- ing Beckman Foundation board member, Gary Wescombe, was officially launched at the Keck Center for Science and Engineer- ing. Commencing in the fall of 2024, the Wescombe STEM Scholarship is a four-year initia- tive that will annually support two students from Orange County, majoring in science fields. These scholars will receive invaluable mentoring, both from faculty and their peers. Sweet Stella, an Aussky (i.e., an Australian Shepherd and Hus- ky mix) is looking for adventure. Her puppyhood was unfortunate, as she started in a truck yard. But now, after living with a foster family, she is thriving. She is one year old, and a real social butterfly, famously getting along with all dogs and humans – even cats! She spreads affection wherever she goes. She is spayed, vaccinated, and a true family girl, ready to share your outdoor ad- ventures and then cuddle on the couch. To meet Stella, or inquire about fostering others, see One Mutt At A Time Rescue, onemut- tatatime.com.
