Octogenarian cycles for music funds Phil Knoll of Orange, 88 years young, recently completed a 40- mile trek between Orange and Huntington Beach on his recum- bent bicycle to raise funds for the music program of a former stu- dent, Jon Johnson. Knoll was the band and orches- tra director at Cerro Villa Middle School, where he taught Johnson, now a music teacher at several schools, including Zion Lutheran in Anaheim. Jon said that Knoll was “the most influential adult in my life not named mom or dad. Along with the life-changing music, he was able to teach things like per- sonal responsibility, moral val- ues, what it is to be part of a team, and basic life skills.” Knoll raises funds for music programs by doing cycling tours (cross-country in four weeks), with parents, former students and supporters contributing per mile. “Jon was an outstanding student," Knoll says. Any amount contrib- uted will be greatly appreciated." He asks that checks be made to Zion Lutheran School, 1244 E. Cypress St., Anaheim, CA 92805.
