26 Offsite and Industrialized Construction: From Capital to Components Despite near-term challenges, offsite construction remains a vital part of homebuilding’s future. In this session, explore where offsite and industrialized construction principles are being implemented, the types of offsite companies that exist today and which long-term tailwinds are driving adoption. In addition, learn about the forces impacting the industry, including homebuilder consolidation, investments by Japanese housing companies and new technology. Opening the Playbook on Design for Offsite Construction This presentation offers an in-depth review of essential design strategies and requirements for modular construction projects and how to achieve a successful design for permitting, manufacturing and field construction. Learn critical best practices using case studies as examples for each phase of architecture and engineering. Explore opportunities for innovation and systematization to serve all stakeholders on the project. This session will be valuable for attendees at all levels of experience in offsite construction to advance and innovate these techniques within the traditional process of design, permitting and construction. Reimagining the Post-Disaster Housing System in the US After a major disaster, the demand for housing is immediate, but the response is often fragmented. Public agencies, private builders and individuals each play a role, leading to delays and coordination challenges. The MIT Humanitarian Supply Chain Lab has been studying this system from several different angles to better understand and improve it. This work has included defining the problem for FEMA through development of a framework for understanding post-disaster housing demand, exploring case studies of various housing business models and supply chain configurations, modeling permitting and inspection processes to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for reform. In this session, we will discuss this work and offer directions for future research.
