ACTIVITIES & ATTRACTIONS Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary The largest overwintering site for monarch butterflies in Monterey County is at the Pacific Grove Monarch Sanctuary, located at 250 Ridge Road. Arriving in October, for a five-month period, the monarch butterflies cluster together on pine, cypress and eucalyptus trees in the Sanctuary. Their migration to Pacific Grove is so unique that Pacific Grove is nicknamed "Butterfly Town, U.S.A." The community has always welcomed the butterflies and advocated for their protection. The Museum of Natural History volunteer docents can be found at the Monarch Sanctuary from Nov - Feb when available, generally from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm, weather permitting. Admission is free. The granite building, the third order Fresnel lens and prisms in this Pacific Grove lighthouse are all original, and it is still and active aid to navigation Built in 1855, Pacific Grove’s lighthouse is on the northernmost tip of the Peninsula. Before its construction, this point had proved dangerous to sailors who mistakenly believed they had reached Monterey Bay. Initially, whale oil was used to fuel the light at Point Pinos Lighthouse. In 1880, the lighthouse shifted to kerosene for fuel. In 1919, it was finally electrified. Robert Louis Stevenson wrote positively of lightkeeper Allan Luce’s hospitality in The Old Pacific Capital, and Emily Fish was nicknamed “The Socialite Lightkeeper” for the many parties and dinners she held at the building. SHOPPING 46 Guide to Pacific Grove Historic Home Plaques You have probably seen many of the green plaques that are on the older homes in Pacific Grove that are mostly in women’s names. They contain the first owner’s name and the year the home was built or more accurately the year it was first recorded in the Monterey County tax records. The significance behind so many women's names continues to be one of Pacific Grove's historic mysteries. Women often lived longer, so perhaps using their names avoided some tax issues when the husband died. It also may have been to protect the home for creditors if a husband’s business failed. Some women were probably widow or unmarried. Unfortunately, no one knows for sure.
