D E S I G N + B U I L D MAD.KAT Gallery is the creation of Kim A. Tolman, a production designer, art director and fine art painter. The gallery was founded to bring new and exciting contemporary art to greater Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. With an emphasis on international and national artists, in addition to talented locals, MAD.KAT Gallery strives to present a high level of artistic excellence to the community. Originally from the rural North Sea coast of Germany, Kim has had a long career as a scenic designer for theatre and opera, as well as a production designer and art director for themed entertainment, television, advertising, and film. But her first love is painting, which she started as a teen. She studied art and design in Oldenburg, soon moving to the media center of Cologne, where she had her first exhibitions and permanent installations. MAD.KAT, which stands for Modern Art and Design Kim A. Tolman, makes its debut opening on July 29 with Kim’s solo show Rückblick 30 1993 - 2023 , a look back at 30 years of artistry from painting to theatre and beyond. Kim’s bold abstract expressionist works combine large scale with vivid color and texture. The show highlights how her style has evolved over the decades and also includes a look at her striking theatre designs. The exhibit runs until October, when the gallery mounts its first group show in·ter·con·nec·tion , an exhibition of 13 international, national and local artists hailing from Greece, Egypt, Germany, Poland, Spain, New York City, San Francisco and more. Coinciding with Fall Modernism, the opening reception is on Saturday, October 21 from 5pm - 9pm. Refreshments will be served and the public is encouraged to attend. MAD.KAT promises up to six exhibitions per year with a special program to be announced for Modernism 2024. The following show, opening in April 2024 is entitled Playful and will be as fun as the title.
