Long-Term Sustainability: Being inconsistent in your exercise routine can help prevent burnout and maintain long-term commitment to fitness. When you don’t feel pressured to follow a strict regimen, you’re more likely to stay active over time. However, it’s important to strike a balance between variety and some consistency for seeing long-term results. Aim to find a balance that works for you, incorporating different activities and maintaining an exercise schedule that you can sustain. The Joy of Being Inconsistent by Charissa Farley Coachella Yoga, Therapy, & Wellness Wildest Restaurant + Bar I have always admired, and aspired to be, perfectly fit, the perfect weight, the perfect parent, the perfect athlete, and the perfect temperament. Then reality hits. Daily. I’m certainly not saying that good habits aren’t a good thing. And overcoming bad habits to create good ones, never happens without effort. But it’s the consistency thing. Throughout my life I have trained, dieted, and studied, but not forever. At some point real life happens; an illness, an injury, an emergency, a wonderful trip or vacation, boredom, a change in schedule or weather, or simply another aspect of my life that requires 110%, and something has to give. If you do have a regiment that you do in day out can stick to, that’s fantastic. But you don’t have to be on an Olympic athlete training schedule for years of your life doing the same thing routine flawlessly not to create patterns, that allow for inconsistency, to still stay strong and healthy. When you “fall of the wagon” with either your exercise routine, eating, or drinking, it isn’t all or nothing. The most valuable thing I have done throughout the years to prepare for inconsistency, regardless of your age or ability, is to be excited about trying new things. Pay absolutely no attention to the worry about if you will be good at it, or if you feel awkward, or if you initially fail. Join a hiking group. Learn pickle ball. Try a different type of yoga. Go for a swim. Take a private lesson. Rent a bike. Just a few things a year (maybe two of them you never want to do again!) will build tools in the toolbox to help you accelerate getting back in the swing of things. Utilizing a variety of different physical fitness activities and being inconsistent in your exercise routine can have several benefits, both for your physical and mental well-being. Here are some advantages of incorporating diversity and inconsistency into your fitness regimen: 1. Preventing Plateaus: When you consistently perform the same exercises or follow the same routine, your body can adapt to the stressors, leading to fitness plateaus. Introducing variety challenges different muscle groups and energy systems, helping you avoid stagnation and continue making progress. 2. Reducing Boredom: Mixing up your workouts can make exercise more enjoyable and reduce the risk of losing motivation. Trying new activities keeps things interesting and can help you look forward to your workouts. 3. Preventing Overuse Injuries: Repeating the same movements or exercises can put stress on specific muscles and joints, increasing the risk of overuse injuries. By diversifying your workouts, you can give those overused areas a break and strengthen other parts of your body. 4. Well-Rounded Fitness: Different types of exercises target various aspects of fitness, such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility, and balance. Incorporating a variety of activities helps you develop a well-rounded fitness profile. 5. Mental Stimulation: Variety in your fitness routine can stimulate your 58 | Your Villa Magazine
