But even these stalwart travelers need our help in Inland Southern California. Join e orts to help recover Western Monarch populations On the Brink of Extinction Sadly, the Western Monarch butterfly population has been drastically declining over the last few decades. In 2020 the number of individuals reached, the lowest level ever recorded: less than 1% of historic populations. The Riverside-Corona Resource Conservation District is working to reverse these trends, and we need the community’s help. Why are Monarchs in Decline? 1. Plants of the Asclepias genus (milkweeds) are the only food source for the Monarch caterpillar. Areas with native milkweed populations have declined due to land use changes to agriculture and urbanization. 2. Broad use of pesticides. 3. Monarch health is impacted by “OE”, Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, a microscopic parasite that is spread among milkweed and nectar-source plants by infected butterflies. Other factors include: loss and degradation of over-wintering sites, loss of plants that provide nectar, and climate change. Come to the Rescue! Plant Native Milkweed: Locally, adult Monarchs lay their eggs on Narrow Leaf Milkweed, Asclepias fascicularis. The flowers also provide nectar for adult butterflies. Native milkweed will go dormant around Halloween and re-emerge around Valentine’s Day. Don’t weed it out if it appears dead. Eliminate Pesticides: Use nontoxic alternatives for pest control. Grow Flowering Plants, especially natives that provide nectar in early Spring and Fall. Avoid planting tropical milkweed. Tropical Milkweed Dormant during fall and returns around Valentine’s day. Don’t weed me out! Keep non-native milkweed cut back from November through February. Native Milkweed
