While intentions are generally good, not all help is beneficial. Here’s a concise guide compiled by Moreno Valley volunteer, JulieAnn Stewart Cleaveland Pedroza of the Building Up Lives Foundation with tips for what to do and what to avoid. What NOT to Do • Avoid Giving Camping Tents: These may provide a false sense of security and discourage seeking safer, long-term accommodations. They also pose a safety risk. • Limit Cash Handouts: Giving more than a minimal amount of cash can prevent individuals from seeking necessary social services for long-term help. • No Fabric Blankets: Opt for Mylar emergency blankets or portable sleeping bags, which are practical and sanitary. What to Do • Provide Suitable Food: Choose ready-to-eat food items like hot meals, sandwiches, and nutritious snacks such as fruits and protein bars. • Offer Employment Opportunities: P oviding work can help financially and boost self-worth. • Acts of Kindness: Awarm greeting or a smile can significantly impact someone’s day. Additional Helpful Items: • Practical Goods: Include items like flashlights, socks, wet wipes, and small hygiene products. • Safety and Comfort Essentials: Offer practical items such as dark-colo ed backpacks and jackets, umbrellas, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Engage with Local Nonprofit Most individuals experiencing homelessness are not defined by addiction or mental illness; they are simply in difficult situations. By oviding thoughtful support and connecting them with appropriate services, we can make a meaningful diffe ence in their lives. In addition to the efforts of The Salvation Army, the following three nonprofits are working with the Mayor and City staff to form a task fo ce to better serve the homeless population. The objective is to provide a more cost effective and interactive program to better serve the community as a collective and cohesive volunteer group and to reduce the number of homeless in our community.
