On July 1st, 2021 the first ArtsWalk will be starting again after a fifteen month hiatus! We spoke with one of the ArtsWalk founders Mark Schooley, owner and director of RCAA, and he stated that the ArtsWalk participants are getting excited about the city coming alive again. ArtsWalk has been taking place every first Thursday of the month since its inception in 2002. Multiple galleries, museums libraries and other community organizations participate by opening their doors after hours for visitors to enjoy exhibits and activities. There are also street vendors and performers in designated areas throughout downtown. Many museums have been opening up again in Downtown Riverside. UCR Arts which encompasses the California Museum of Photography, The Barbara & Art Culver Center for the Arts, and The Sweeney Gallery, have reopened offering free admission. While the museums had rich online programming during the pandemic, according to Sheila Bergman, Executive Director of UCR Arts, they are excited to be welcoming the public back to the museums. Like many venues, they are still limiting their occupancy numbers, and it is advisable to make reservations so you are sure to get in. (ucrarts.ucr.edu) The Riverside Art Museum, which has always been a cornerstone of the ArtsWalk evenings, has also opened back up with limited days and hours. They are excited to welcome patrons back to the museum. The current main exhibit, “Golden Hour” is a collaborative effort together with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Through a program called Local Access, LACMA is sharing special exhibitions with RAM and 4 other California museums. (riversideartmuseum.org ) Riverside Community Arts Association, which never stopped coming up with innovative ways for its members to show and sell art during the pandemic, is also looking forward to opening their doors again to in person shows and events. Their current exhibit is the Members Semi-Mini Exhibit and is viewable online and in person. You do need an appointment to visit the gallery in person, but if you want to visit the website, you can do so anytime. (rcaaarts.org ) To visit any of these venues in person while enjoying the vibrant/creative activity of Downtown Riverside, be sure to come to ArtsWalk. The first Thursday of every month, starting again on July 1, 2021. We’ll see you there!
